The Wolverines faced off with Indiana last night in a classic Old West gunfight: Fire away from a distance, keep shooting and don't run out of ammo. When the dust cleared from the main drag they call Assembly Hall, only the home team was left standing. The Hoosiers (4-2 Big Ten, 11-7 overall) hit 12 of their 18 3-point shots en route to a 99-83 win, knocking the Wolver- ines (4-2, 14-5) back out of the Big Ten first-place tie they had climbed into Sunday. "I'm sure Michigan feels that they weren't very good defensively tonight, but we just had an offensive game tonight that was like old times," Indiana coach Bob Knight said, referring to the five national championship banners strung from the roof of Assembly Hall. "We haven't shot AP PHOTO that well in a long time. That's been a mark of good teams t. that we've had." The Hoosiers have not always been a good team this year -they have been consistently inconsistent. But last night, they looked like the favorite to win the Big Ten title. Sophomore Neil Reed lit up the Wolverines for 26 points, all but two from behind the arc, and senior Brian Evans went for 29 on 10-of-14 shooting. "Brian played as well tonight as he has since he's been here," Knight said. "He scored, he rebounded, he had 11 assists." siers Even center Todd Lindeman, who was averaging 3.5 em. points per conference contest before last night's game, came ed. to play against his home state. The 7-foot senior had 17 points and played terrific defense. var "Lindeman had a career game," Michigan coach Steve after Fisher said. It should be about how, with the rest of the Michigan men's basketball team picking up fouls like so many Makhtar Ndiayes, Louis Bullock decided to stick to the basics. Of course, the freshman guard's definition of "the basics" is a little different from yours or mine. Reed and Bullock staged a shooting exhibition, nailing five treys apiece and playing "You can't top this" for 20 minutes straight. The break found Indiana up 46-43. From there, the Hoosiers slowly pulled away, trading threes for twos and turning the ball over only twice. The game was effectively done when Reed knocked down his second 3-pointer in two min- utes to give Indiana a 12-point lead with 4:08 left. Reed answered what the Cream and Crimson fans had been worrying about all season: the Hoosiers realized that they don't have to pass it to Evans to score - they can actually put it in the basket themselves. And, withalittle help from Evans, they did that last night - much to the Wolverines' collective chagrin. Big Ten Standings Team 1. Penn State -Purdue 3. Indiana Michigan 5. Michigan State 6.
