"Oftentimes there are images.'K ofahappy-go-lucky slave (who is)con- tent with his status. It is important that w we have an accurate historical por- trayal." Matlock said the exhibit aims to re- mind the University of the importance of freedom. "The issue offreedom runs free in the ° writings and documents. It is a remark- able exhibit of how under remarkable circumstances, people always tried to survive and be free-freedom was al- ways on their mind," Matlock said. "It's a reminder for me as an African American of how important historyis." Kinesiology senior Stacey Foster agreed that the exhibit should raise awareness of significant issues in Afri- can American history. "I would enjoy seeing it presented in a public setting where everyone could go and see it," she said. "I can never learn enough about my own history." While free blacks were allowed to live and move in many Northern terri- tories, these men and women often met prejudice from their white compatriots and were denied equal opportunities for economic and political advancement, Cox said. "Theslave-holding mentality, or the idea that whites are superior to blacks, has always been present in the U.S." Cox said. "It's important to recognize that the problem ofslavery is the prob- lem of freedom - you cannot have one without the other. I hope (people) learn more, do more and change things. The primary materials on display il- lustrate that despite the many barriers, a. numberoffree African Americanswent on to receive degrees from colleges and took initiative in educating themselves and their children. A few individuals, like James Forten of Philadelphia, managed to amass ex- traordinary fortunes regardless of the great odds against them. A successful black shipping merchant who started out as a sailor, Forten made $100,000 by 1832, and used his substantial re- sources to sponsor anti-slavery causes and charitable activities. The collection documents how free blacks organized and mobilized sup- port for causes like the abolition of' slavery, sociaijustice and social equal-, ity. It contains a pamphlet from an 1843 Detroitpolitical conventioncon- vened to lobby the government for equal rights. The exhibit attempts to show that, racial hatred and prejudice during this period were so pervasive that even the white abolitionists viewed blacks with a certain degree of paternalistic antago- nism. According to a letter on display,. one abolitionist remarked: "I can recall the time when in walking with a colored brother, the darker the night, the bettet Abolitionist was I." The exhibit, which runs through March 6 in celebration of Black His- tory Month, attracted many visitors during the University's Martin Luther King Jr. Day program. Matlock said the collection's message of freedom, equality and advancement of Afrtcan Americans fits the dream that King represented. "These activities strengthen me - those are the roots ofmy folks,"'Matlock said. "There are some things you never forget; they have to be passed on from generation to generation." Matlock stressed the University's role in advancing knowledge and truth. But he said the issues King and so many other black leaders of the past dealt with are still here. "MLK Day and Black History Month make me aware that there are many things I should continue to learn," Matlock said. "I am satisfied with the job the University is doing (in this area). The University has done a lot, but there is much more tobe done here and around the country." Shy agreed with Matlock's assess- ment of the University's performance. "I've been around for 35 years, and there is a lot more effort being made now than ever before," Shy said, "I think the University is doing very well." For some students, however, the University's present efforts are not enough. "The University tries really hard and makes options open," Foster said.
