I 10 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, January 23, 1996 RECORDS Continued from Page 5 The rest of the songs have already been released. "Superunknown" is the title track of Soundgarden's last album, "She Likes Surprises" was on the do- mestic vinyl version and non-United States versions of"Superunknown," and the other tracks have appeared on im- port singles. While many people don't have those singles, there are still at least foursongs (not including live versions) that were on import singles in the past two years that are nowhere to be seen domestically. The computer information is pretty good. You can access videos of around shalf-dozen songs, as well as interview alips with the band and footage of Artis tbe Spoonman doing the spoonman thing. There're other entertaining things as well, like areas where you can partially ;ntrol the development of a photoj am, play pong or make sounds by clicking gn objects. The interface is also fairly sasy to navigate through and has easily ccessible shortcuts to other places ithin the computer world. However, the pricetag of around $20 s hard to swallow when you get little opre than a four-song single. You're ~upossedtobe able to play songs within he program, but I don't seem to be able :oI'm unsure as to what else I may be nissing in the program. Oh well, what 'm getting anyway is pretty good. - Ted Watts Ginger Far Out Nettwerk Productions We all know about those "parental advisory" stickers gracing the front of certain offensive discs out there: gangsta rap, death metal, Barney, etc. They're designed to protect our youth from sex, violence and excessive grunting. While these are really wonderful, it's clearly time to expand the advisory sticker line and introduce the "crappy, generic, sec- ond-rate, sub-bar-band advisory" to protect all of us who have managed to develop some taste. There'd be no need to write that out on every sticker, a picture of Ginger would do nicely. Think of all the innocent masses who'd be spared the garbage crammed into "Far Out." Without this sticker, countless unfortunate people might have to endure the watered-down album rock of "Feel Like Falling Down" and the laughale ballad "Saying Sorry Again." If you had to hear Ginger get tough on "Mr. Attitude," you'd wish there'd been a sticker there, too. These guys have less personality than Foreigner. Rather thanjust be another example of drivel, Ginger could spawn a revolution. Those considering purchasing "Cracked Rear View" would see the Ginger seal right next to the word "Hootie" and go buy somethingelse. Collective Soul would never be heard from again. This may seem like nothing more than a bitter diatribe of someone who never seems to find anything good to review. Maybe it is. That doesn't change 'Othello' lacks focus the fact that Ginger really deserve to be the poster boys for banality. Write your congressman immediately. - Dave Snyder Tesla Time 's Makin ' Changes - The Best of Tesla Geffen Try to name three Tesla songs. Go ahead. Betcha can't. Think you can? OK ... three Tesla originals. Gotcha. For all you big Tesla fans out there, there's a greatest hits album in town and it's got your name on it. Seriously though, "Time's Makin' Changes" shouldn't even be called a "Greatest Hits" album, but "Tesla - A Few Songs That May Have Been Played on the Radio More Than Once." Sure, it's got the big hit "Signs" that they didn't write. It also has originals you might recognize like the decent ballad "Love Song," and the rockin' "What You Give." Their '80s break- through A.O.R. classic "Changes" and the mediocre "Edison's Medicine" are here, but that's about as good as it gets. From a band who put out a mere five mediocre albums, it's surprising that Geffen would bother to release a Tesla best-ofpackage. Anyone who liked Tesla in their "prime" probably already owns the majority ofthismaterial. All ofitisold except the mediocre "Steppin' Over." Yes, "Time's Makin' Changes" ac- curately chronicles Tesla's short-lived career, but the real question today for a world that doesn't listen to metal is, "Who really cares?" - Brian A,. Gnatt By Kate Brady Daily Arts Writer Oliver Parker's "Othello" joins the recent rush of Shakespeare plays to hit the big screen. Full of fine performances and beautiful visual images, this film does not disappoint. "Othello" is the tragic story of a great man led into ruin by the friend he trusts the most. The Moor Othello (Laurence Fishburne) - a brave and respected soldier - weds an affluent Venetian, whom he greatly loves. The evil lago (Kenneth Branagh) uses his influence to turn Othello against his best men and trick him into believing that his loving wife has been unfaithful. Although largely successful in its adaptation, this "Othello" fails to con- vey the true spirit of the play in some important ways. The first miss is in its focus; the movie gives too much attention to lago. Granted, Branagh is a powerful actor and does a marvelousjob, but this seems insufficient reason to place him above the title character. While useful in the beginning, the gratuitous use of the close-up soliloquy too often breaks up the action without providing enough new information. The film also fails to present a clear purpose for lago's revenge. Despite his time on camera, lago's motives for or- chestrating Othello's downfall are un- clear and unconvincing. REVREW Othello Directed by Oliver Parker; with Lawrence Fishburne, Kenneth Branagh and Irene Jacob At State Furthermore, the character of Othello is underdeveloped. For this reason, the full tragedy of his fall from grace is not completely realized. This is no fault of Laurence Fishburne, who is excellent; his terrific performance makes the auz dience wish that he had been given a greater opportunity to shine. Othello's wife Desdemona, played by Swiss actor Irene Jacob, is another example of under-used talent. Com- 4 pared to her maid (Anna Patrick), she is little more than a pretty face. Patrick, as the wife of lago and loyal maid to Desdemona, steals scene after scene. The costumes and setting, along with the masterful use of lighting provide a feast for the eyes, as well as a tradition- ally authentic background for this trag- edy. "Othello" is a polished-looking piece of work. Parker has given us a worthwhile viewing experience. Although he does not find perfection, the merits of this "Othello" quite outweigh its faults. 6 * save like never before COUpon page ---- --- - IZA H o u s e deftST..- ..i Tr/ 1 r The Michigan Daily Coupon Book ----_-_- - -- Home of the world famous Chipati! wi ea ppg I~ A1 2 $1.'*50?
