FINYD IT In THlE By Jeff Eldridge Daily Staff Reporter The Boardof Regents will soon move one step closer in its search for the next University president. At a meeting of the Presidential Search Committee last Friday, the re- gents announced they will publicly reveal a finalized search plan Thurs- day. "I think it is essential that this com- mittee do as we said and make this plan open," said Regent Rebecca McGowan (D-Ann Arbor). "By the end of (Thursday's) meeting we should be ready and have a search plan in place." Regent Shirley McFee (R-Battle Creek), co-chair of the search com- mittee, emphasized the important role the nine public forums played in form- ing the criteria to select the next presi- dent. "We did feel it was only appropriate for us to do this when the forums were concluded," McFee said. "(The next president) has to have a whole cosmo- politan of characteristics and be able to do a lot of things." Regent Laurence Deitch (D Bloomfield Hills) said he strongly supported the pace and process of the search. "The constitution vests in the regents the ultimate authority in selecting the president ofthe University," Deitch said. "There are some cynical people who wish us to fail - and we will not do so. ... We will, on a timely basis, elect a great president of the University of Michigan." Deitch also said the regents were not divided over the details of the search process. This statement was reinforced when, after some discussion, the board voted unanimously to select Russell Reynolds Inc. to assist the search com- mittee in its presidential hunt. McFee said a portion of Thursday's meeting may be closed to the public to discuss legal issues with University at- torneys. SEARCH Continued from Page 1A The University's presidential search will be the first one MacKay has con- ducted at a public institution. He said he made an exception for the University, but in the past he has stayed away from public schools because of"so much red tape." MacKay said he will not be involved in any other university searches during the next year. "I was very impressed when he said he only works on one university search per year," said Regent Nellie Varner (D-Detroit), a co-chair of the search. "1 felt concerned about the focus and attention we'd get from someone work- ing on 18 cases at one time," Varner added, referring to another firm the regents interviewed. Although the regents decided unani- mously to hire MacKay, Regent Deane Baker (R-Ann Arbor) said he voted for MacKay only to show consensus among the board. "He has limited experience in higher education," Baker said in an interview yesterday. "But I think Mr. MacKay can do a good job." MacKay's fee has not yet been deter- mined, but he indicated that the firm's policy is to charge one-third of the next president's first-year salary. Duderstadt now earns $260,709 per year. - Daily Staff Reporters Jeff Eldridge and James A. Nash contributed to this report. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND !!! YOU CAN AFFORD US!!!
