Cooper said it would have been more appropriate if the University had chose* an alum to speak to the class of 1996. "Another pool of candidates is for- mer alumni like Gerald Ford, James Earl Jones, Nancy Kassebaum," Cooper said. "Or possibly alumni now in the news, like Jack Kevorkian." Other students have voiced concern about Cole's possible involvement in some controversial organizations. In December 1992, Cole came under scruti ny when she was being considered for th position of secretary of Education. Some publications, including the New York-based Jewish newspaper The Forward, called her a "leftist extremist," and said she belonged to the pro-Castro Venceremos Brigade and a Soviet front group known as the U.S. Peace Council. Attempts to reach the two organizations this week were unsuccessful and it is unknown whether the groups still exist. Michigan Student Assembly LSA Rep. Jon Winick said Cole should be "jetti- soned" from speaking at commencement. "If there is a significant portion that believes her to b anti-Semitic, pro- Castro, that is not someone who is fit to give a speech about students' futures," Winick said. "She is clearly out of the mainstream. I am afraid she will give a divisive speech." In 1994, Cole received the Tree of Li award from the Jewish National Fund. Harrison noted that negative comments are often made about prominent people. "Almost any public figure has things written about them," Harrison said. "Look at the things written about Hillary Clinton. But only a few people would disagree that we should have given her an honorary degree." Cooper said he would rather have had a political figure speak at the ceremone. But President James Duderstadt sai the University tends to stay away from political personalities in election years. "As a general rule, during an elec- tion year, we try to stay away from political figures" Duderstadt said. Duderstadt also said Cole was cho- sen for her contributions to higher education. Cole has led the all-female black institution since 1987. "She has been outspoken about high* education" Duderstadt said. "We think she has very important things to say' Cole holds sociology and anthropolo- gy degrees, and served on President Clinton's transition team as a cluster coordinator for Education, Laborand the Arts and Humanities. Cole has honorary degrees from more than 30 institutions. During his comments, Cooper sug- gested the University had. ulterior motives for choosing Cole. "I feel you, the Board of Regents, a* well as the University asa whole, has taken political correctness way too far," he said. "If this was the main motive behind your decision, which I am sure it is, I feel a more notable PC speaker could be found" Harrison said the University has had a variety of speakers during the last few years, including Marian Wright- Edelman and then-President Bush. "We have to be clear in the fact that people can achieve excellence in all walks of life ... not just politics' Harrison said. FEM. ROOMMATE needed I bdrm. in 1g. hse. Ldry. 624 S.
