12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, January 19, 1996 'M' grapplers prepare for in-state foe in first home dual. By Jennifer Hodulik Daily Sports Writer While Michigan students return from the winter holidays, the wres- tling team hopes to get a break of its own today when it faces an inexperi- enced Central Michigan squad. The No. 13 Wolverines will wrestle in their first home dual meet of the season after facing tough competition at the Virginia Duals this past week- end. Michigan coach Dale Bahr insinu- ated that his squad should have the upper hand against the Chippewas, who have not beaten the Wolverines in 10 attempts. "This is a lighter weekend since we went home for Christmas," Bahr said. "We are a stronger team overall." However, the Michigan lineup has experienced some injuries during a difficult stretch, that included visits to No. 9 Penn State and No.23 Lehigh. "We've had a lot of competition and we're kind of beat up," Bahr said. "We're trying to get some of our start- ers healed up." TheWolverines will be without freshman starter Taya Hill (142-lbs) who is out with a knee injury. Senior leader Jake Young (150) and fresh- man Frank Lodeserto (190) will most likely be out as well. Rounding out the list of potential question marks is freshman Joe Warren (118). Bahr indicated that these injuries might not be critical in the face of Central Michigan. "Central Michigan has a young team that is good in the lighter weight classes," Bahr said, "but we're real strong after that. In the weight classes above 150 lbs., we should win." Those upper weight classes, 158- heavyweight, have certainly been ef- fective thus far, combining for a 31-9 record this season. Third-ranked senior captain Jesse Rawls (177) is undefeated in dual meets with an 8-0 record (20-3 over- This is a l ter weekend since we went home for Christmas. Sophomore Jeff Catrabone (167) has also enjoyed an 8-0 record (28-4 overall) in dual meets and is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation. At 158, sophomore Bill Lacure has been reliable in tallying 19 wins on the year. Sophomore heavyweight Airron Richardson rounds out Michigan's top-heavy squad for Friday's event. He is ranked No. 6 with a 26-6 overall record. Bahr will call on some reserves to fill in for the injured starters in the other weight classes. "Some backup people will get a chance to wrestle," Bahr said. "(These are) guys who need to get some expe- rience." Junior Drew Pullen will likely be called upon to fill in for Taya Hill at 142 and freshman Jeff Reese will likely take over Jake Young's spot at 150. Senior Lanre Olibisi will prob- ably replace Frank Lodeserto at 190. Cagers need to stay foa And now for our special feature, where one ignorant Michigan men's basketball fan gets to ask questions of a True Expert - namely, yours truly. ® ® Ignorant Fan: It seems to me that the next nine games will seal Michigan's Big Ten fate. The Wolverines play six games against - S the three teams that have a chance to beat them out for the Big Ten title - Penn State, Iowa and Purdue. And they play two games against Indiana, which is always tough. The only easy victory should be the Feb. 3 game at Ohio State. Expert: Right. Ignorant Fan: Obviously, winning all nine is coach Steve Fisher's dream. It's also not going to happen. My feeling is, if the Wolverines go 8-1, they will be the favorite to capture the conference championship. If they go 7-2, they will have an excellent shot, pro- vided that the two losses are not to the same team. A 6-3 record would mean they have to win their last five games to have any chance. Is that fairly accurate? Expert: Yes. Ignorant Fan: Despite Penn State's 13-0 record, Sunday's game " is a must-win for Michigan. Big Ten sed for rest Ignorant Fan: The Boilermakers have one of the Big Ten's best coaches in Gene Keady, a tremen- dous homecourt advantage and a 13-2 record. That said, I can't see Purdue winning this. It's a team full of role players, a team that will have trouble scoring down the stretch in close games. The Boiler- makers are destined to stumble a few times along the way. Expert: Uh-huh. Ignorant Fan: That leaves us with Iowa and Michigan as the most likely candidates for the Big Ten title. Iowa hasn't not played nearly as well as it's capable of playing. Forward Jess Settles has been several notches below the stardom that was predicted for him in the preseason. Guard Chris Kingsbury is struggling with his shot. But the Hawkeyes have lost only three games, including one Big Ten contest. Settles will improve, and Kingsbury is capable of catching fire for a couple of weeks. Iowa is still the favorite. Expert: OK. r o fBzgTenI Ignorant Fan: But don't count out Michigan. The Wolverines are the most talented team in the conference, and everything seems to be coming together. Players are settlingin their roles. Fisher has found a lineup he likes. Guys who have struggled - like swingman Willie Mitchell and center Robert Traylor - are improving by the day, it seems. This team is danger- ous. Expert: It is. Ignorant Fan: As a fan, I like ,Michigan's chance of winning the Big Ten crown. But if the players start looking past opponents, they will find themselves losing to poor teams. The Wolverines are not nearly good enough to look past anyone. So while I can daydream about winning the conference, the players have to concentrate on the next obstacle, namely Penn State.
