On Saturday, Michigan softball pitcher Kelly Kovach overcame two such marks which had stood for nearly eight years. With Kovach's seven innings of work in the Wolverines' 11-5 victory over Minnesota, she eclipsed Vicky Morrow's school record of wins and innings pitched in acareerby a Michi- gan pitcher. Kovach came into the season need- ing eleven wins to reach Morrow's career mark of 65. She has cruised through her senior season and man- aged to tie the record in style, hurling a one-hitter against Penn State. The win extended her 1995 record to 11-2. The stage was set on Saturday for Kovach to reach 66 wins. Aside from a rough third inning in which she allowed four runs, Kovach pitched a nearly flawless game. "She's just a winner and a very nice kid," coach Carol Hutchins said. "It is a tribute to her to be the winningest pitcher in Michigan his- tory because there has been a lot of good pitchers." While this win could be attributed to her fine play, much like the other wins in Kovach's illustrious career, it had as much to do with the hitting and defensive performances of her team- mates. In the win over Minnesota, the Wolverine hitters scored 11 runs on 15 hits. In addition, the team commit- ted only one error. These kinds of numbers are very similar to those of previous Kovach victories, further il- lustrating the supporting cast that has facilitated her achievements. Kovach has other Big Ten wins this season of 12-0 over Purdue and 14-0 against Penn State. "This (record) is more of a team thing." Kovach said. "In order to get this record, you have to hit and play defense even though the pitcher gets all of the credit. It has a lot to do with our defense. (Coach) Hutchins stresses good fundamental defense. We rarely break down." Kovach, the team co-captain, fur- ther exemplified the durability she has maintained throughout her career by achieving the school record for innings pitched. Kovach came into Saturday's sec- ond game against the Golden Go- phers needing only one complete in- SOFTBALL Continued from page 12 win the game in the seventh inning. With runners on second and third and only one out, Taylor attempted to tag up and score on a fly ball. She easily crossed the plate in front of the throw from centerfield, but the um- pire ruled that she had left third before the ball was caught. Michigan redeemed itself in the top of the 10th inning, scoring two runs to seal the victory. Griffin pitched all 10 innings, striking out eight in recording her 13th victory. "She really came through towards the end," Smith said. "I think we had to pick it up a lot more in the second game." The Wolverines are in first place in the Big Ten with 10 conference games left to go. Their toughest chal- lenge should come from Northwest- ern. Going into the weekend, the Wild- cats were tied with Michigan for first place with a 6-2 Big Ten record. "Wins are tough," Hutchins said. "The farther we get into the Big Ten schedule, the tougher they are going to get." 1 On tUp Here is the upcoming schedule for the Michigan softball team. ning to break Morrow's record of 700.2 innings pitched. She captured the mark in style shutting down the top of Minnesota's lineup in order in the first inning. The Wolverine all-time record now stands at 707 innings and is bound to rise throughout the remainder of the season. In her quest to further erase Morrow's name from the record books, Kovach is rapidly approach- ing the career records for strikeouts 'and shutouts. With Kovach's five strikeouts on Wednesday April 29 April 30 May 3 May 6 CENTRAL MICHIGAN (DH) NORTHWESTERN (DH) NORTHWESTERN (DH)' at Ohio State (DH) at Michigan State (DH) :1 :1 p.m. p.m. p.m. p.m. p.m. Saturday, she has moved to within nine of Morrow's mark in that cat- egory. Kovach's total is now at 437 compared to Morrow's 446 strikeouts. In last Wednesday's 14-0winover Penn State, Kovach extended her ca- reer shutout total to 30. This number is six short of Morrow's career total of 36. In assessing the achievements of Kovach and Morrow, "The differ- ence is that Morrow was an All-Ameri- can, but Kovach has two Big Ten wins. That says it all," said Hutchins, who has coached both players. ~ri ii SOFTBALL results Congratulations To The Graduating Class of 1995!
