The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, April 10, 1995 - 9 'M' netters humble *Nittany Lions, 6-1 Women's tennis splits pair with Big Ten foes By Alan Goldenbach B) Brett Krasnove Daily Spats Writer Call the Wolverines the Road Warriors. The Michigan men's tennis team beat Penn State (2-2 Big Ten, 11-4 *overall) Saturday, 6-1, for its fourth Big Ten victory away from home in eight days. The win was the Wolverines' sev- enth consecutive conference victory and improved their record to 7-1 in the Big Ten and 12-6 overall. They trail only Ohio State in the race for the conference regular season title head- ing into next weekend. Michigan, ranked No. 28 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's latest poll, swept all six singles matches - accounting for all its points. The Wolverines, however, dropped two of three doubles matches to lose the doubles point. Wolverine junior John Costanzo outlasted Nittany Lion serve-and- /olleyer Ivan Spinner at No. I singles, 5-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). The loss was only *he seventh in 29 singles matches this -eason for Spinner. "Ivan Spinner has been one of the Nest players in their part of the coun- Ty," Michigan coach Brian Eisner paid. "He was in the national indi- fidual rankings for a good share of he year. He's now dropped out of the rational rankings, but he's a good ilayer." At No. 2 singles, Michigan junior PeterPusztai crushed ChrisCahill, 6-2, 5-3, handing the Penn State junior his ifth consecutive Big Ten loss. At No. 3 singles, freshman David Paradzik defeated sophomore Michael Carter, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. In a battle of freshmen,. Arvid Swan contributed with a 7-5, 6-1 vic- tory over Penn State's Colin Smeeton, ending Smeeton's seven-match win streak. Junior Geoff Prentice outplayed senior Brett Englesberg, 6- 4, 2-6, 7-5. Senior Grady Burnett, who has been the rock of consistency for the Wolverines at No.6 singles, completed Michigan's singles sweep. Burnett defeated freshman Dale Cathell, 7-5, 7-6. The triumph gives him a singles record of 21-9, making him one of four Michigan players with 20 or more victories on the season. The 20-win club also includes Pusztai and Paradzik (24-10), as well as Costanzo (23-9). Prentice and Swan captured Michigan's only doubles victory. The tandem defeated Carter and Smeeton, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Spinner and Cathell outlasted Costanzo and Pusztai, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles, while Burnett and Paradzik dropped their match to Doug Schoenly and Andy Moran at third doubles. In its past four matches, Michigan has outscored opponents, 26-2. The Wolverines play their final road match of the regular season Wednesday against Midwest rival Notre Dame. They then close out the season with home matches against Ohio State and Indiana next weekend. The Big Ten Team Championships will be held April 27-30 in Bloomington, Ind. Daily Sports Writer A mix of solid individual perfor- mances combined with a disappoint- ing team result made for a bittersweet weekend for the Michigan women's tennis team. The Wolverines split their week- end twinbill with Big Ten rivals Northwestern and Wisconsin this weekend. The No. 29 Wildcats ended Michigan's four-match win- ning streak with a 7-2 victory on Saturday. But the Wolverines embarked upon a new streak yesterday, with a 6- 3 win over the Badgers. Against Northwestern, the score did not indicate the closeness of the match. The last two doubles matches were called off when the victory was clinched for the Wildcats after their win at No. 1 doubles. "The players realized that it was just a matter of a few points in some of the matches," Michigan coach Bitsy Ritt said. "We could have eas- ily been up 4-2 going into the doubles if it were just for a few points here and there." Despite splitting a pair of matches that it needed to win in order to have any shot at a Big Ten regular season title, Michigan received an All-Ameri- can-caliber performance from its No. I player, Sarah Cyganiak. The No. 59 Cyganiak ran her singles record to 13-5 and Big Ten Mark to a perfect 8-0. She beat Northwestern's No. I player, Siri Eklund, with relative ease, 6-2, 6-2, in one of only two Michigan victo- ries over the Wildcats. Yesterday, in perhaps the match of the weekend, she defeated the 30th- ranked player inthenation, Wisconsin's Lauren Gavaris, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. Cyganiak's coach had nothing but the best to say of her top player. "(Sarah) had a great weekend," Ritt said. "Her win over Lauren Gavaris was just outstanding." Outstanding to say the least. After losing the first set in a nailbiting tiebreaker, Cyganiak came back to win the last two sets and take the match. She trailed, 5-3, in the final stanza, but rallied to win the final four games and take the match, 7-5. Michigan now finds itself in third place in the Big Ten looking-at an- other possible showdown in the con- ference tournament against, North- western. Even if the Wolverines finish in second place, then they would still be in the same half of the bracket as the Wildcats. "Our goal now is to get the third seed in the (Big Ten) tournament so that we would be on their (the Wild- cats') side of the draw and face them in the semis," Ritt said. TONYA BROAD/Daily Junior John Costanzo and the Michigan men's tennis team roared into University Park and tamed the Nittany Lions Saturday. The Wolverines are 7-1 in Big Ten competition and have won four road matches in eight days. iU Write the Daily j Attention M.A.P. Students!
