Michigan Alumni work here: The Wail Street Journal The New York Times The Washington Post The Detroit Free Press The Detroit News NBC Sports Associated Press United Press International Scientific American Time Newsweek Sports Illustrated USA Today Because they worked here: 3Ptidi - By Tim O'Connell Daily Staff Reporter As the 104th U.S. Congress ends its third month of legislation today, Republicans and Democrats alike will assess the progress of the GOP's "Con- tract With America." Republicans have pressed to introduce debate on the 10 points of the contract. Despite the defeat of the contract's Balanced Budget Amendment pro- posal in the Senate and term limits in the House, the GOP hopes that the new, Republican-dominated Congress will pass most of the bills proposed by the contract. The contract calls for such proposals as Congressional term limits - which failed Wednesday - as well as welfare reform and capital gains tax cuts. LSA junior Mark Fletcher, presi- dent of the campus College Republi- cans, said, "It is a shame that the Balanced Budget Amendment failed. However, while the Republicans would have preferred that this amend- ment pass, they are going to do their best to balance the budget without it." Many students reject the Republi- can agenda. More than 30 campus orga- nizations have formed a "Coalition Against the Contract on America." The coalition held a protest rally and march Wednesday afternoon. "The CACOA march was an over- whelming success," said Hays Ellisen, a Law student and coalition orga- nizer. "Student activism is alive on the campus.". Fletcher disagreed. "This (protest) was organized by the Democratic Party, and its college affiliates na- tionally. I consider the protest a fail- ure for I do not feel it changed any student's opinion about the 'Contract With America,"' he said. Ellisen maintains that the coali- tion is not part of the Democratic Party. "With 30 student groups in the coalition, it is silly for anyone to think we are Democratic lackeys." Not all onlookers appreciated the march Wednesday. "I believe the American people voted this government in; this is what they want. These protesters are really a loud minority. The liberals have run this country for 40 years, and they were voted out during a conservative movement," said LSA sophomore Eric Cedo, who witnessed the protest. LSA seniorHarryBarnettdisagreed. "I think (the Democrats) have got a point on alotofissues.Just because you were outvoted doesn't mean you should change your opinion," he said. Fletcher still supports the GOP. "The Contract With America has been one of the strongest agendas for change ever developed. It was the first time politicians signed a contract with the people, encouraging the people to throw them out of office if they lied," he said yesterday. Ellisen worries that the contract misrepresents the electorate. "Only 5 percent of Americans said at exit polls that the 'Contract On America' even influenced their vote in the last elec- tion," he said. Student opinion varies on the new Congress, and most is not as unwa- vering as Fletcher and Ellisen's. "Generally, I think I like the new Congress," said LSA junior Bryan Huffman. "I think a lot of the things they're doing are right on the mark." LSA sophomore Jay Shah does not support the Republicans. "I would say that a lot of the (GOP) measures are not as beneficial as public opinion seems to believe," he said. REM - MAIN FLOOR - lower and upper bowl tickets available. Call 662-0387. "A five-probe match is extremely uncommon between unrelated per- sons, and a very strong evidence that the samples found on (the murder victim's) body and the known samples from the defendant came from the same source," Mattson said. Dr. Steven Milligan of the Michi- gan State Police Crime Lab in East Lansing testified that there was a six- probe match between DNA evidence in a Sept. 28, 1992 rape occurring in Eberwhite Woods on the city's west side and genetic material from Mitchell. "DNA is basically the blueprint of all life," Milligan said. "For a six- probe match to Ervin Mitchell's known blood sample, in the Cauca- sian population, you would see it one time in 7.8 trillion individuals. In the Black population, it would be one in 1 trillion." Dr. Julie Howenstein, also from the lab's DNA unit, testified that there was a five-probe match between DNA evidence from the Oct. 2, 1993 rape ofaUniversity studentandMitchell's DNA. She said the chance that the semen came from a person other than Mitchell was 1 in 8 million. The same DNA testing used by the prosecution to incriminate Mitchell cleared him as a suspect in six rape-murders occurring between 1989 and 1991 in Inkster, Mich., where he resided before moving to Ann Arbor. The court is considering postpon- ing the trial for a Christmas Eve as- sault and robbery, which ultimately led to Mitchell's arrest, until after the trial on the more serious rape and murder charges. Police took DNA samples from Mitchell after the Dec. 24 arrest. KATHY'S WORD PROCESSING * typing * editing- Dissertations, papers, applications, transcription. 662-8977.
