4 - The Michigan Daily - Weekend etc. -- Thursday, January 12, 1995 Ann Arbor: Can't beat these eats 0i By DANIELLE BELKIN As a senior graduating from the University in April, I have come to appreciate the numerous attributes that are unique to-Ann Arbor. Most stu- dents are satisfied with the conve- nience of Entree Plus at the Union or the ease with which they can order a chipati from Pizza House. But as a consumer of great food around this town I must state un- equivocally that to dine, in other words eatout, not the vaulted meaning which conjures up visions of champagne and aspic, in Ann Arbor is a real treat. The restaurants around this town of- fer some of the finest food I have ever tasted, not to mention the reasonable prices, enjoyable atmosphere and quality service that most provide for their customers. But let us not simply wallow in generalities, it's time to really dig in and get the juice on the places that supply chow with pow to Ann Arborites and University stu- dents and staff. Breakfast, considered to be most important by "health experts" and skipped most often by everyone else, is more than just a meal at Angelo's. It is an experience that should not be missed by anyone. To graduate from the University and never have tasted the French toast made from their own home baked bread isjust plain wrong. Not only does the proprietor offer it prepared the way Mom used to make it, but the menu also lists fried French toast with strawberries and whipped cream. Consider consuming that dish before sitting down to write a 10 or 20 page paper. Clearly, there is no chance of getting that feeling of extreme tired- ness once the third page is written after a shot of sugar that large. For the health conscious fat gram and calorie intake counter, the same French toast can also be prepared with egg whites and skim milk. Lunch is made into an occasion for many students, who use it as a time to catch up with friends and leisurely enjoy whatever seems to fit the mood of the day. Let me suggest a restaurant whose name alone con- notes an extremely enjoyable lunch experience, Afternoon Delight. The large selection on the menu includes soup in a bread bowl, for those cold and windy days, sandwiches and the best salad bar I've seen this side of the East River. The salad bar extends beyond the basic veggies and includes four cold pasta dishes. It also offers eight different dressings and a variety of mustards and jams to spread on the bread which is included as well. Oh, and it's also a refillable bowl. The best time to go for a meal is about l p.m. between late March and early October when there are still tables available for outdoor seating. Now savor your meal. Places to eat dinner abound in Ann Arbor. There are restaurants that prepare anything from Korean cui- sine to French and Southwestern to Italian. Depending on the predisposition of your paunch there is a restaurant that will accommodate your mood. Palio, an Italian restaurant on Main street is a great choice for quality food and service, as well as prices and atmosphere that make the customer comfortable. The pasta dishes on the menu allow the customer to choose what kind of noodle out of five types he or she wants and then match the noodle with the dish, like pasta primavera using rigatoni or gnocchi with tomato basil sauce. The menu supplies all the traditional favorites with some new twists. It's fun to go out and experiment with different dishes, especially if you're with friends because it is an experience everyone can share. Just be wary if your friend wants you to order the octopus with capers and goat cheese while he or she munches away on baked ziti. So get out there! These are just suggestions and these opinions were only formed through trial and, unfor- tunately for my poor tummy, error. There are tons of places to go, but they must be sought out. Let your fingers do the walking or better yet, buy a ticket on the heel toe express and look around for yourself. I know, as I lamentthemany things that I will be leaving behind come May 1st, the "tastes of Ann Arbor" will be high on the list.
