Sign up for b r morel Call: 763-4319. kindn.essto hitcampus By Kiran Chaudhri For the Daily Don't be surprised if President James J. Duderstadt hands you a drink today. This week students should beon the lookout for this and other random acts of kindness. Project Smile, a student groupaimed at promoting friendliness at the Uni- versity, is sponsoring a week of feel- good events for its"Friendly Days." Activities include Meet Your Ad- ministrator Day, the Bugs Bunny Film Festival, Dance forUnity, and Frietilly Tables, stations with interactive video hook ups linking the MUG with Leonardo's on North Campus. "We've been working hard all year," said Engineering junior Leslie Baxter, coordinator of the Friendly Tables. "It's all culminating in this week. I think this is the best way to kick off a week for a year long feeling on campus." LSA senior Mike Petrilli, Project Smile co-founder, said the goal of Friendly Days is to create a warmer atmosphere throughout the University. "We do hope that people feel like they are part of the University com- munity and for that to mean some- thing," he said. The first event of the week is Meet Your Administrator Day, on the Diag today. Administrators, including Duderstadt, will be handing out re- freshments and talking to students in order to gain "a feeling of coopera- tion,"Petrilli said. Other administrators on the Diag today include Walter Harrison, vice president for University relations; Maureen A. Hartford, vice president for Student Affairs; and Provost Gil- bert R. Whitaker Jr. "As a first step and to raise con- sciousness, (Friendly Days) is a good step in that respect," said Dean of Stu- dents Royster Harper, who will also be on the Diag. "But what it takes for a loving community is for people to care about each other, and I don't think that can be orchestrated." LSA junior Richard Berri also ex- presseddoubts. "Ithink the atmosphere at U-M is very unfriendly," he said. I don't really know if (Friendly Days) is going to work. It will be nice for the week, but I don't know if any of it will carry over." Rackham graduate student Dawn Ottevaere, however, called Friendly Days "a great idea." "Michigan can definitely use more friendly people," she said. "Even po- litenesscan bepromoted here.... People are always in such a hurry." Members of Project Smile called "Friendly Ambassadors" will be roaming the campus, encouraging politeness and other random acts of kindness throughout the week. "I think that (Friendly Days) is built on the random acts of kindness," Harper said. "But what I think we have to do is genuinely care about each other. U-M doesn't have to be large and cold; U- Mcan be large and warm.... Anytime we want U-M to be different, we can change it," she added. ./ -- $$ATTENTION ECON. & English majors.
