Simpson
detective
testffies on
blood vial
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A vet-
eran detective acknowledged yester-
day that he misstated information
while trying to get a search warrant
for O.J. Simpson's home and carried
a vial of Simpson's blood almost 20
miles across town without booking it
as evidence.
Focusing on defense theories that
police mishandled evidence and pre-
maturely deemed Simpson a killer,
attorney Robert Shapiro suggested the
blood could have been contamiated
or may even have dripped from the
vial in the two hours it took Detective
Philip Vannatter to deliver it.
"The risk was me not keeping con-
trol of the blood, the chain of cus-
tody," Vannatter said in defending
his action. "I made the decision to
hand-carry it to the criminalist who
was processing all the other evidence."
In a separate development, court
records confirm the so-called "mys-
tery envelope" produced in last
summer's preliminary hearing con-
tains a knife found in Simpson's home,
a weapon unrelated to the slayings of
Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald
Goldman.
In a private conference Monday,
Superior Court Judge Lance Ito barred
its presentation to jurors, for now.
Defense attorneys want to show the
knife was overlooked in a haphazard
police search of Simpson's home.
Deputy District Attorney Christo-
pher Darden strongly opposed any
mention of the knife, calling it irrel-
evant.
"The knife is not the murder
weapon. What is the relevance of that
knife? What does it prove? It proves
nothing. It proves nothing at all," he
said, according to a court transcript.
He and Deputy District Attorney
MarciaClark disclosed they are drop-
ping any mention ofadowntown knife
store where Simpson bought a stiletto
just weeks before the murders.
That purchase was offered as key
evidence in the preliminary hearing,
after which Simpson was ordered to
stand trial for the June 12 slashing
murders of his ex-wife and her friend
outside her condominium, just two
miles from Simpson's home.
Vannatter told jurors it wasn't sur-
prising the murder weapon has never
been found.
"A knife is a very easy thing to
dispose of," the detective said. "I have
cases where I never found the body,
so it's not unusual to not find the
weapon."
Vannatter'sactions in the Simpson
case were the subject of extensive
pretrial litigation, and Ito earlier criti-
cized the detective's misstatements
on a search warrant affidavit, calling
them "at least reckless."
Vannatter acknowledged in his
testimony that he submitted an affi-
davit saying human blood was found
on Simpson's Bronco, although no

sophisticated tests had been conducted
to confirm that.
"That's true. I misstated that. I
guess, based on my experience, I be-
lieved it was human blood, and I think
now, I still think it's human blood,"
he said.
He also said in the warrant that
Simpson had left unexpectedly on a
flight to Chicago, although the detec-
tive had been told the business trip for
Hertz Corp. was planned well in ad-
vance.
Prosecutors sought to bar ques-
tioning on the search warrant, saying
it wasn't a jury matter. But Shapiro
persuaded thejudge to allow the ques-
tioning.
