WELCOME

J A N U A R Y

The temperature is falling, there's snow on the ground and you've got the winter sniffles. These are signs that Winter Term is upon the
University of Michigan campus. I hope that you had a restful break and are off to a good new year. If you're like me you probably have
three New Year's resolutions; 1) study more, 2) go out less, and 3) attend/participate in as many athletic events as possible. Now let's
be realistic, you will only keep one of those promises, so I've provided you with a listing of all the Varsity and Intramural sporting
events on campus during the month of January. Now you can live up to one resolution, unfortunately I can't help you with the
other resolutions.
I still want to hear from you, so I will assign your first paper of the Winter Term. NIKE 101, Assignment #2, Write me a sob story
explaining why you should receive two tickets to the Michigan vs. Indiana mens basketball game. Send your letter to me at the address
below and you may win two tickets to the February 19 game.
I will talk to you again next month in the NIKE Sports Page, until then, [ look forward to reading your letters.

For those of you who like to "Just Do It," you already know how fun the Intramural
Sports Program is at the University of Michigan. For those of you who haven't
participated, get your friends together, it's a great study break. The current Intramural
standings are as follows:
" FRATERNITY- Theta Chi " SORORITY- Delta Zeta
* FEMALE- SPH " CO-REC- Williams House
" INDEPENDENT- Arsenal
The Intramural department needs basketball officials, if you feel up to the task and want
to have a great experience, call 763-3562.

"What if there were no sports, who would I be, would I still be your hero." Sound
familiar? It's the best basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. Although you may
know all of his stats and have every pair of Air Jordan's made, you may not be familiar
with the P.L.A.Y. movement that Michael is supporting.
In today's money tight world, where school's are terminating their athletic programs
and community centers are closing left and right, many of today's youth are being
deprived of the privilege to participating in athletic endeavors. Being aware of this dis-
turbing trend, NIKE formed a non-profit organization, P.L.A.Y. The movement encour-
ages people to Participate in the Lives of America's Youth. The object is to funnel
resources to youth groups, such as The Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
NIKE is the catalyst of this movement, but it all begins with you. The benefits of
donating or volunteering your time to a youth group far outweigh the downfalls.
As always, Greek Week at the University of Michigan donates large sums of money to
charities. This year NIKE is pleased to announce that Greek Week will place a special
focus on PL.A.Y:'s charities. Be sure to look for P.L.A.Y:s presence during Greek Week.

As city landfills overflow there is a
renewed emphasis placed upon recycling
efforts. This disturbing problem came
about because the average American
family of four creates about 150 pounds
of trash per week. Multiplied by 52
weeks, this equals 7800 pounds each year.
To help envision this amount of waste,
picture 9 horses, 4 / cows, 5 pilot whales,
or a WW II German Fighter plane.
In order to combat the waste problem, we
all must do our part. Whether this means
recycling your paper at the computing
center or throwing your pizza boxes in a
recycling bin, it must be done. Many cor-
porations are joining the recycling efforts.
In the forefront of recycling technology
is NIKE's N.E.A.T. Team. NIKE's
Environmental Action Team is striving to
reduce the amount of solid waste that is
compiled daily. One of their most inno-
vative programs is the Reuse-A-Shoe
Program. Reuse-A-Shoe provides a way
for consumers to recycle their old NIKEs.
The recycled material is then used for
constructing resilient sport surfaces such
as outdoor basketball courts, running
tracks, playground fall protection and
tennis courts.
Look for the Reuse-A-Shoe program
this spring on the University of
Michigan campus.
