Greek Week to raise funds for-charity By Soumya Mohan For the Daily Greek Week, a weeklong event to raise money for area charities, kicks off today with opening ceremonies in the Michigan Union's Pendelton Room. The week will start with a large gathering bringing together students and representatives from the five area charities supported by the Greek sys- tem and the American Red Cross. The week's events will include the "Mr. Greek Week"pageant in the Power Center and a dance contest at Rick's on Wednesday. Thursday, an educational forum on CPR will be held in the Union. Friday will be a day for fuir and games with a number of events sched- uled on the Diag including a dunk tank, spelling bee and musical chairs. The week will end with a variety show and awards ceremony in Hill Audito- rium. This year, the Greeks hope to raise 550pintsofbloodduringtheirweeklong blood drive in the Union. Hershel Wancjer, Greek Week co- director, said, "I think (the week) should be a phenomenal event." Wancjer said the opening ceremo- nies, which first took place two years ago, give the students and the adminis- tration the opportunity to meet with the charities and find out how the money collected during the week is used. Greek Week co-director Bob Jasek sounded enthusiastic about this year's collections. "Word's been getting out, and we're hoping to make more money for our philanthropies this year," Jasek said. The philanthropy chairof the Delta Gamma sorority, Ali Suarez, said she has been busy organizing her house and making sure everything works out. "I'm really excited, there's lots going on," Suarez said. Some big-name companies like Nike and Burger King also are taking an active interest in Greek Week. Tomorrow, Nike will run the "Re- use a shoe" program at the Sigma Nu fraternity. Students can donate a shoe, and Nike will use them to make new shoes for those in need. Burger King has announced a weeklong program where people can allocate 25 percent of their purchase toward Greek Week charities. Jasek said that apart from raising money for the charities, the Greeks also hope to complete 1,500 hours of community service during the course of the week. Each team will adopt a charity and do community service for it. Poll: Engler- Clinton race would be close in '96 LANSING (AP) - Not many people across the nation know who Gov. John Engleris, butagood share of them would vote for him in a presiden- tial contest with President Clinton, a poll shows. The poll, conducted for the politi- cal newsletter "Inside Michigan Poli- tics," showed 45 percent of those asked would vote for Clinton and 42 percent for Engler. Another 13 per- cent were undecided. "If the electorate is faced with even a faceless, Brand X Republican like Engler, they're prepared to vote for him compared to Clinton," said news- letter publisher Bill Ballenger. Ballenger said that was true even though only 28 percent of those in the poll knew who Engler was. "Clearly, it's a commentary of Clinton's weakness. If you'd said, would you vote for(Ohio)Gov. George Voinovich or President Bill Clinton, I suspect the numbers wouldn't be too much different," Ballenger said. The poll, released today, was done by the polling firms of EPIC-MRA of Lansing and Mitchell Research and LIKE TO PARTY? Join our Moveable Feast catering staff! Food service experience a must.
