Not just guitar. announcements E Watchdog groups say more than 2,000 crimes stem from sexual orientation By Vahe Tazian Daily Staff Reporter A national study released earlier this week indicates that crime against homosexuals is on the rise. In total, 2,064 anti-gay or lesbian crimes were reported in 1994 from Detroit, New York, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Colum- bus, San Francisco and Portland, Ore. The study was conducted by gay and lesbian watchdog groups in those cities and shows the figures to be up 1.6 percent from 1993. This included 22 murders of gay or lesbians, stemming from their sexual orientation. Ronni L. Sanlo, director of the University Lesbian Gay Bisexual Pro- grams Office, said the problem is greater than the study indicates. "People who are victims of anti- gay violence are just not coming for- ward to report the crimes," Sanlo said. She attributed this problem to a variety of reasons. She said reporting a hate crime is like coming forward as a homosexual, which some people are not ready for. Also, she said many homosexuals have been taught not to trust "the system" or the police. However, Sanlo added that her experiences with the Ann Arbor po- lice have been good. "They tend to be very responsive, and they respond sensitively," she said. Matt Foreman, executive director of the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, the report's na- tional facilitator, also said hefeels many incidents go unreported. "There's been at least 10 surveys done with more than 10,000 respondents," Foreman said. According to the report, 96 anti-gay incidents were reported in Detroit, a 14- percent increase from 1993. Ninety- two involved some type of physical assault, including beating, murder and sexual assault. Name-calling, vandal- ism and robbery were also cited. Three men were killed in Michi- gan last year because they were gay, according to Detroit's Triangle Foun- dation, a gay activisf group. In the nine metro areas around the United States in 1994, 30 percent of those accused in the hate crimes against homosexuals were 18 or younger; 72 percent were 30 or younger. The report also showed that crimes against lesbians increased 19 percent to an all-time high, with one-third of all crimes committed against women. "It's hard to tell why people are vic- timized," Sanlo said. "Gays and les- bians are always on guard. There is always the stress of, 'When is it going to happen to me?"' The University does not keep records of hate crimes, or crimes di- rected toward homosexuals, said Uni- versity spokeswoman Julie Peterson, However, Sanlo said LGBPO has encourages students to come forward and report when they are victimized. - The Associated Press contributed to this report. WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) - Casino Windsor workers walked off the job yesterday, taking a gamble that a strike would get them the wage increases they couldn't win at the negotiating table. "They're paying peanut wages and making millions," Mark Morin of Windsor, a casino valet, said as he protested outside the casino. The casino, which takes in more than $1 million daily, pays an average of about $6.60 an hour. Officials with the Canadian Auto Workers union, which has represented the 1,800casino workers sinceSeptem- ber, say the workers are seeking a 38 percent pay increase over three years. The casino - run for the province of Ontario by Windsor Casino Ltd.-- has offered a pay raise of more than 11 percent over three years - 21 percent if benefits are included, com- pany president John A. O'Brien said. "pi ENTERPRISES, INC. Home of the U.S.A.'s Leading Office Furniture Remanufacturer is IN SEARCH OF... "Yes, and we decided that it was against the values of the University of Michigan to do so," Rezmierski replied. The panelists were MacKinnon, Steinhardt, Scott Charney, director of Computer Crimes Unit of the U.S. Department of Justice; Daniel Weitzner, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Tech- nology; and Virginia Rezmierski, assistant for Policy Studies in the University's Information Technol- ogy Division.
