No words can describe the strength of the people who work and volunteer at the shelter. Every day they bring with them generous and courageous hearts who posess an unflagging dedi- cation to the animals. They must have these qualities because at HSHV they are confronted day after day by animals without homes, desprately in need of TLC. People who are not able to care for their pets properly anymore, or who have too many sometimes bring their pets to the HSHV. Both domesticated and wild ani- mals found in the area are brought to the shelter by locals who also posess concern for animals. In 1994 the shelter took in nearly 8,000 animals, primarily dogs and cats. The animals are taken in, fed and given their own small area. The animals are not allowed to go up for adoption until they have had a full check up. Cats sometimes arrive with feline Luekemia virus and dogs with heatworm, both deadly diseases common in animals who are not regularly taken to the vetrinarian. Only friendly animals that can adjust fairly quickly can be put up for adoption. Animals found in the wild, such as feral dogs and cats can be an added challenge. If the animals are at all responsive to people they provide a special project for these animal loving folks. Some animals, such as the feral dogs and cats, in need of a transistion home, are sent to foster homes, provided by the generous people who work at the Humane Society. Once an animal has been chosen by a visitor, the Humane Society goes through an extensive background check, to ensure that the adopter and adoptee are compatible. I m
