Rogovin discussed socialist altern- atives to Stalinism last night to acrowd of more than 200 in the Pendleton Room of the Michigan Union. With the help of a translator, Rogovin said Stalinismhas been falsely equated with socialism since the period of Perestroika and Glasnost. "The memory of Stalinism weighed heavily in the hearts of every Soviet citizen. Therefore, new information on the Stalinist period provoked and in- creased interest in leadership," he said. He said that for two years, "the minds of citizens were occupied with rethinking this part of history." But he said, "The understanding and the level of thinking was over- whelmed by the level of anti-commu- nist propaganda." As a result, "the criticism of Stalin quickly turned into a criticism of Trotskyism and Leninism," Rogovin said. He said the focus of his research has been to show how the opposition to Stalin led by Leon Trotsky could have been a valid alternative to Stalinism. It was this opposition that Rogovin called "one of the main reasons that Stalin decided to instigate the great terrors." "It is absolutely clear today that the great terror was not due to patho- logical suspicions of Stalin, nor was it simply a measure taken by Stalin to prevent the formation of opposition," he said. "The great terror was the only method by which Stalin could combat his opponents." Today, he said, "socialism has been betrayed two times. First by Stalinists and finally by the recent lean of Soviet bureaucrats" who have linked Stalinist criticism to socialist criticism. He added that, as a result, "the idea of socialism has lost its confidence and its attraction for people all over the world who relate it to Stalinism." The current conditions in the former Sovietrepublics "indicate that we speak of a need for the rebirth of the socialist idea," he said. Rogovin said that if socialist alter- natives had survived and outlived Stalinism, "today we would have a ANIMAL SHELTER Worker. Rogovin discusses socialism and Stalinism in a speech last night in the Michigan Union. number of advanced socialist coun- tries with a high degree of economic development." "If all of (Stalin's) crimes had been avoided, the world would look very different," he added. After Rogovin's speech, David North, the national secretary of the Worker's League, called Rogovin a "courageous man" for continuing his research despite the current political climate. He said that because of schol- ars like Rogovin, "the basis is being laid for the rebirth of socialist politics and culture." Dan Renfrew, an LSA junior and member of the Young Socialists, said the speech carried an important mes- sage. "It is very important that these points are made because people in the U.S. tend to associate socialism to Stalinism. "When Stalinism failed, people talked about the failure of communism and socialism, but it is very important to know that Stalinism was a corrupt form of socialism," Renfrew said. Rebecca Marko, an LSA first-year student, said, "I found the speech in- teresting because I think that history is essential in order to understand the future, so people should use every opportunity to understand the past in order to have a full-bodied opinion of the events of today."
