PAID ADVERTISMENT S P 0 R T S P II G E MARCH MADNESS It's that time of year again. Spreak Break is only a fading memory. The winter drags on and it seems to get colder every day. Professors pile exams and papers on top of each other, and there are no more vacation days left in the school year. Just when you think there's no reason to get out of bed; there is one. The month of March contains one of the most exciting spectacles in sport. The post-season basketball tournament. Just the mention of the tournament conjures up thoughts of Rumeal Robinson hitting the game-winning free throw in 1989 or Chris Webber's ill-fated time-out in 1993. Whether you root for Michigan or not, the tournament is incentive enough to get out of bed. After all, games don't start until-the afternoon. I've also got some great things planned on campus. So if you see me, don't be afraid to stop by and check out what's going on. I still want to hear from you, so I'll assign another paper. But unlike class there is no page minimum. NIKE 101, Assignment #3. The first person telling me about a Spring Break adventure in NIKE's will receive a premium NIKE gift. Until next month, good luck with everything. Cross-training emerges as a fitness revolution. For some "Greek Week" may conjure images of jumping in Jello or playing Twister. Yet for others, it means a new hope at a brighter future. As always, Greek Week at the University of Michigan donates a lot of money to charities. This year NIKE is pleased to announce that Greek Week will focus on P.L.A.Y.'s charities. Participate in the Lives of America's Youth is a NIKE program that provides resources and creates partnerships that keep recreation alive for kids. P.L.A.Y. is NIKE's war on complacency and we are very happy that Greek Week has decided to help in the betterment of America's Youth. Although NIKE's presence will be felt throughout Greek Week, I will be passing out lots of cool stuff at three events: The Sigma Nu Hotshot Shoot-out, held on Tuesday, March 14, which will also feature the NIKE Reuse-A-Shoe program that recycles old shoes into new useful products like resilient basketball courts; The Alpha Delta Phi/Delta Delta Delta volleyball tournament, Wednesday, March 15, and DIAG Day, Friday, March 17, will also include NIKE giveaways. No matter where you are during Greek Week, stop by and pick up some cool NIKE stuff. NIKE is proud to introduce that one of its founding fathers is coming to the University of Michigan campus to speak to the student population. Nelson Farris, who has been with NIKE since most of you were born will speak at Hayle Auditorium on Thursday, March 16. Nelson began his career with NIKE in January of 1973 selling shoes out of a van to track and field athletes in Southern California. In 1976, he left his van and moved into the sports promotions depart- ment. His main responsibility was to get NIKE products on track and field athletes. In 1978, Nelson moved to NIKE head- quarters in Oregon to head the NIKE track and field promotions department, which included the development of sports promotions and marketing pro- grams for running related activities. Nelson's travels continued as he relocat- ed to Holland in 1981 to help establish NIKE's first international office. His trav- els brought him back to Oregon in 1983 where he has been involved in many pro- jects, including Olympic development. Nelson is currently the director of NIKE education. He serves as an interpreter of the NIKE culture to employees and busi- ness partners. Nelson has traveled over 1.5 million miles for NIKE. Luckily you don't have to travel that far to see him. 15 3CM 16{ 12 MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING at Diving Zones, Oxford, OH MEN'S TENNIS at Minnesota, 6:30pm WOMEN'S BASKETBALL at Big Ten Tournament HOCKEY at CCHA Quarterfinals MEN'S & WOMEN'S TRACK at NCAA Indoor BASEBALL at Georgia Tech, 4pm WOMEN'S TENNIS at Ohio State, 7pm o MEN'S GYMNASTICS home for Mich.
