Leading the conference is No. 1 Iowa with a 14-0 mark and four wrestlers with a No. 1 national rating. Not far behind the Hawkeyes is Michigan State at No. 5, Minnesota atNo.6, Illinois atNo.8 and the Wolverines at No. 13. After a bye in the first round, Catrabone advanced to the final by pinning No. 7 Eric Smith of Ohio State in 6:58 in the second round and decisioning Ernest Benion of Illinois @1 to set up the championship bout with Wirnsbirger, whomhehadbeaten twice in the regular season. With the score tied 1-1 after over- time, Wirnsbarger registered a rever- sal 20 seconds into the 30-second overtime period to take the match 3-1. "I was just hoping Icould ride him out," Catrabone said of his thoughts preceding the overtime. "That's all it as, 30 seconds to be the Big Ten ampion. I just couldn't pull it out." The Wolverines as a team, how- ever, were not as successful as Biggert and Catrabone, finishing fifth overall Women petters drop three out Of four By Alan Goldenbach Daily Sports Writer After opening the season with our consecutive victories in ex- tremely impressive fashion, the Michigan women's tennis team has come back down to earth, losing three of its last four meets. The Wolverines fell to Notre Dame and Wake Forest by scores of 5-4 and 6-0 this weekend. Both teams were ranked among the top 15 in the na- 4Friday, the No. 15 Fighting Irish used their strong play in singles action to take five of six matches. The lone Wolverine who emerged victorious was senior Liz Cyganiak, who rallied to win 3-6,6-2,6-4. Michigan fared much better in doubles play as it took all three matches from Notre Dame. The pairs of Sarah Cyganiak with Apra Moon and Jaimie Fielding with imone Lacher both won by counts of 8-4. Angie Popek and Liz Cyganiak won their match 8-6. Saturday the Wolverines re- mained in South Bend to take on No. 14 Wake Forest and definitely saw their toughest competition of the season. The Demon Deacons swept all six singles matches against dichigan and the doubles contests eren't even played. "They (Wake Forest) just did a lot little things a lot better than we did. They all just added up," Liz Cyganiak said. These two losses now leave the the Wolverines at 5-3 and losers of three of their last four meets. This is a far cry from the team which dominated its opponents in 0 first four meets losing six matches. But saying that the team is slumping would be wrong. "I wouldn't say that we've hit the skids," Michigan assistant coach Susan Sommerville said. "The two teams that we saw this weekend were of much higher caliber. It was the first time, besides our match with Kentucky, that we've seen eams of that caliber." Sommerville simply says that the team has just reached the part of its schedule where the Wolverines will consistently be going up against top teams. ok more like NCAAs year has been the performance of 150- pound junior, Lincoln Mcllarvy. Mcllravy is 70-2 in his three-year col- lege career, with two national titles and three Big Ten titles. Mcllravy won five state championships at his North Da- kota high school including one as an eighth-grader. FAN-TAsTic: Indiana's Assembly Hall wasn't filled up, but half the fans were cheering for the Hawkeyes. While the Wolverines didn't have nearly as big a fan section, it was loud and sup- portive. KNEE-DEEP: Wolverine junior 177- pounder Jesse Rawls Jr., who was an All-American in 1994, suffered a knee injury against Rohan Gardner of North- western in the second round of the behind Iowa (185 points), Michigan State (109.5), Minnesota (83) and Il- linois (82). Other top individual finishers and na- tional qualifiers for Michigan were Jehad Hamden with a third place finish at 190, Airron Richardson with a sixth place fin- ish at heavyweight and Jesse Rawls Jr. with a sixth place finish at 177. "I think that this championship was marked by very few surprises," Michigan coach Dale Bahr said of the meet. "You look at the national rankings and how we fit the national rankings and of course Iowa is a run- away and they're the national leader in the rankings. Michigan State's fourth and Minnesota's fifth and Illi- nois is seventh or eighth and then we're next. And that's exactly the way the (Big Ten Championship) rankings came out." third-place bracket to fall out of the tournament and possible national con- tention. Although Rawls' two wins on Saturday guaranteed him a spot in NCAAs March 16-18, he may not be healthy in time for the competition. Rawls, who had not competed since Jan.28 when he injured the same knee against Gardner, will be examined by doctors in Ann Arbor. "Probably the biggest disappointment of this whole tournament was Jesse re- injuring his knee," Michigan coach Dale Bahr said. "It might be a situation where (the injury) might be bad enough to hold him out in the NCAAs." INTRAMURAL SPORTS PRO GRAM 0 !vi FUN!
