Dolan's Big Ten record-setting performances in the 1650 freestyle, 400 IM, 500 freestyle and the 800 freestyle relay (6:24.91) were the highlights of the meet for Michigan. Lancaster beat former Michigan swimmer James Sharp's Big Ten record in the 200 IM and also set a conference records in the 400 freestyle (2:54.62) and 800 freestyle relays. "Tonight, I felt good the whole way. It felt easy." Dolan said after his mile win (14:47.27). "It was a good y swim for me. Physically, my arms felt really good." The Wolverines go for the national championship next month in Indianapolis. won fo of the top five spots in that event. H-ov ever Dolan, who has battle* asthma since childhood, had breath- ing protl ems before his 400 IM swim. "I'd had a lot of breathing prob- lems al meet. I was a little worried about th 3t. I knew that if my breathing was all rtight I'd do well," Dolan said. Urbane iek obtained a Breath-Rite nasal b .ndage before Dolan's swim to improve his breathing and Dolan said it v orked. After all, Dolan also set a Big Ten rec >rd in that event with a time of 3:44 28, overturning teammate Marcel Wouda's previous record. Dolai also took second place in the 500 freestyle behind teammate John Piersma, who set an a confer- ence rec)rd with his time of 4:15.55. "The 500 is pretty much Michi- gan-dor linated," Urbanchek said "We we e expected to win." Fres rman Lancaster's perfor- mance i i the conference meet was equally impressive -hc set a confer- ence record in the 200 IM in the preliminary heat with a time of 1:45.59 and swan a leg in two record-setting relays. After Lancaster's 200 butterfly victory Saturday, Urbanchek said, "Jasona ad Derya came through as@ freshmen; to get us to NCAAs. They really did the job at this meet." TRACK Continued from page 8 against I linois, Indiana, Purdue and Wisconsi. Freshman Brandy Taylor was the fitrst Wolverine, but she quickly dropped to last place among her com-@ petition. Clay, who grabbed the baton from Taylor, had a simple story. She began in fifth (i.e. last) place and fin- ished in fifth place. Johnson, runner number three, quickly gave her team hope as she pressed into third position. She eventually faltered intofourth place mere seconds before handing to an- chor, sophomore Lamika Harper. Harper commanded respect within* moments of gaining the baton as she blazed her way into first place, where she stayed until the last half-lap. Here, the bad luck which has accompanied Harper throughout the season, and which locked as if it had taken the day off, returned with full force. Harper, tired' was easily overcome in the last stretch by all but one runner. And, as the final :,lap in Michigan's face, the single Wisconsinrunnerbehind Harper passed her seconds before passing the finish line. TheMichigan relay team wentfrom last place to first place, but in the end, the only part that really matters, the Wolverines (3:53.43) were last in their heat. Boilermakers Charnise Hughes, Kristan Wolfrom, ShawnaJenkins and Yasen came in first (3:46.99). In the end, Michigan remained in third place with a score of 58. The two teams M:chigan head coach James Henry predicted would be the toughest for his athletes to overcome, Illinois and Wisconsin, had muscled their way to first and second place finishes with scores of 132 and 83, respectively. The Big Ten Championships de- stroyed Michigan's chances of regain- ing the triple-crown victory they won last seasoa, but all wasn't gloomy. A number c f individual performers - Tearza Johnson, Monika Black, Karen Harvey arnd freshman Tania Longe - shone through their individual perfor- mances.
