With an extremely undermanned roster, the Wolverines were not able to turn it around, losing in a close meet, 223.15 to 222.5. Michigan knew it would be with- out two of its top seniors in Brian Winkler and Raul Molina. Winkler was out for personal reasons and Molina was unable to compete because of an injury. Perhaps the toughest blow dealt to the team was when junior Chris Onuska injured his Achilles tendon in warmups. Onuska would have competed in the all-around for Michigan. His injury left the Wolverines with only five entrants on the pommel horse, the floor exercise and the rings and four entrants in the parallel bars. A team normally fields six entrants in each event. Michigan was forced to field an undermanned roster that included some younger gymnasts. Michigan coach Bob Darden said the lack of depth was the reason for the Wol- verines' low score. "We went in with a real skeleton of a squad," Darden said. "Having guys finish in the top three shows we are doing great, but we just don't have the depth." Indeed, Michigan was able to enjoy strong performances from se- nior Rich Dopp and junior Bob Young (55.2 and 56.6 respectively). But the fact that the Wolverines were shorthanded in four events pre- vented them from putting up the scores they needed. Winkler and Molina would have provided the team with both high scores and more athletes to compete in the all-around. Brigham Young featured Darren Elg, one of the nation's top gym- nasts. His all-around score of 57.5 was the high for the meet. Elg posted a 9.8 on the floor exercise and a 9.9 on the parallel bars. With the Big Ten tournament coming up in a month, Darden and the Wolverines hope to survive the injury bug, while at the same time fit new players into the competi- tion. "We are going to be limping into the Big Tens," Darden said. "It will be a tough one. Will we have the scores to get us to Regionals?" That question will be answered by Michigan's performance in the next month. A healthy month of March and a strong showing at the Big Ten tour- nament will have the Wolverines in a comfortable position for the forth- coming Regionals. thet othe eek WHo: Carrie Zarse TEAM: Women's swimming and diving HoMEowN: Rockford, 11. Michi- gan freshman heavyweight Airron Richardson wrestled against Jeff Walter in a match that went down to the wire. Richardson was down 3-2, late in the third period when Walter was called for stalling. The stalling penalty gave Richardson a free point which tied, the match and brought it into over- time. Neither Richardson nor Stark registered a takedown in the first overtime period, forcing a coin toss to determine position for the second overtime period. Richardson won the toss and easily escaped from Stark to win the match. His escape tied the overall team score at 16-16 and ended the Wol- verines' season at 7-3-2.
