2 - The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, January 9, 1995 Here is how the top 25 teams in college basketballfared this week- 'M' grapplers win two. of three in dual meets By DANIELLE RUMORE Daily Sports Writer It was a perfect day. Though it was cold, the newly fallen snow sparkled on the ground as the sun shined brightly overhead creating apicture-perfectday. It was Saturday, and the Michigan wrestling team played host to Morgan State, Eastern Michigan and Lehigh for a series of dual meets at Cliff Keen Arena. Just when it seemed that the No.20 Wolverines would garner three victo- ries and put the exclamation point on an otherwise perfect day, Lehigh spoiled the moment. After trouncing Morgan State and Eastern, Michigan fell to the No. 17 Engineers. With the Wolverines trail- ing 15-13, Lehigh captured the heavy- weight class, clinching the victory, 18- 13. Lehigh ran over the Wolverines in the first five weight classes, getting off to a fast 15-0 lead. The tables began to turn as the next four weight classes resulted in wins for Michigan. Freshman Jeff Catrabone (158), ranked No. 6, defeated No. 12 ranked Brian Cippolone, 4-1, and se- nior Chad Biggert (167), ranked No.5, defeated Kyle Severson, 14-4. "It's almost like two different dual meets when we watch the first five guys and the last five guys wrestle," coach Dale Bahr said. "If we can only split the first four weight classes, we can compete with anyone in the coun- try." The most emotional battle was be- tween No. 11 junior Jesse Rawls Jr. (177) and No. 7 Rick Hepp. Rawls, who injured his back in the Midlands Tournament, saw minimal practice last week, yet defeated Hepp 3-2. He won on a takedown with two seconds re- maining in the match. "Those guys, are archrivals," Bahr said. "All (Jesse) has done is ride the bike and work on getting his back bet- ter. I'm really amazed that he can go out there and wrestle and beat a sev- enth-ranked guy in the country without any practice." Senior Jehad Hamdan (190) brought Michigan within two points of Lehigh as he defeated Andrew Fitz, 11-5. The outcome of the match rode on freshman heavyweight Airron Richardson. He lost 3-2 to No. 10 Bill Closson, eerily reminis. cent of the Illinois match. d"His match was not the difference in the meet," Bahr said. "The differ- ence was at 118 and 134, where we gave up five points and four points early in the match. "It's just too bad that he's the last guy (to wrestle)," said Bahr. "We lost in the first few weight classes." The first dual meet of the day fea- tured Michigan against Morgan Stat* in front of a group of intense Morgan State fans. One in particular taunted the Wolverines with chants such as "Crush that Wolverine like a jelly bean!" The taunting did little to disrupt Michigan as it went on to win the meet 45-4. The Bears forfeited in the 118, 150 and 158 weight classes, handing the Wolverines 18 unearned points. Michigan registered two pins by Chad Biggert(177) and Jehad Hamdan (190) along with three shutouts by Drew Pullen (142), Jeff Catrabone (167) and Airron Richardson (hvywt). The Morgan State meet included a few changes in the usual lineup. At 142 lbs., sophomore Drew Pullen replaced Mike Ellsworth, who has struggled maintaining his weight. Catrabone (158) moved up to 167 lbs. and Bigge* (167) moved to 177 lbs. "The reason (for the changes) was because Jesse Rawls got a sore back and we wanted to give him a break before he wrestled the Lehigh match," Catrabone said after the match. "It was just for the team." The Wolverines defeated Eastern 42-3 after moving Catrabone and Biggert back to their usual positiori* and inserting Rawls to warm-up for Lehigh. Michigan registered two shutouts by Catrabone (158) and Biggert (16 and two pins by Rawls (177) and Richardson (hvywt) enroute to the vic- tory. J WRESTLING NOTEBOOK Engineers end victory drought at Cliff Keen By JED ROSENTHAL Daily Sports Writer It usually holds true to form that engineers are overwhelmingly smart. Just walk around campus and listen to them discuss all of the problem sets they have to do. Well, they can wrestle, too. The Lehigh Engineers steamrolled into Cliff Keen Arena Saturday, riding a perfect 3-0 record. Lehigh then waltzed out of Ann Arbor with three more wins, including a thrilling 18- 13 verdict over the Wolverines. The last time the Engineers won at Michigan, Ronald Reagan was in the White House. During the 1985-86 season, Lehigh beat the Wolverines, 26-16. Over the last eight seasons, Michigan has won all eight meetings between the two schools. During that span, the Wolverines have outscored the Engineers, 227-97, including a 36-11 trouncing in the 1992-93 sea- son. Michigan still leads the all-time series, 12-8. NOT PULLING THEIR WEIGHT: Once again, the lower weight classes failed to produce in a dual meet. Lehigh swept the first five matches, leaving the Wol- verines in a 15-0 inescapable hole. "We've got to score early in the lower weights," Jesse Rawls said. "Our upper weights are good, but they're not that good that we can lose our first five matches." Against Illinois on December 10, Michigan suffered the same results. Excluding MattStoutin the 118-pound class, the Wolverines lost all of its lower weight matches, putting the team behind 14-3. IT'S A SIUE THING: Before facing Lehigh Saturday night, Michigan hosted Eastern Michigan University and Morgan State University, and the Wolverines beat the two schools 42- 3 and 45-4, respectively. With the two wins, the Wolverines added to their winning streaks over both schools, leaving the all-time se- ries records at a perfect 8-0 each. I 1 2.
