He also finished second in the 800-meter run, leading the Wolverines to win the championship. BACKGROUND: Sullivan ran a leg of the Wolverine record-setting distance medley relay team last season. Sullivan and his teammates went on to later break their own record at NCAA Championships. The relay team also brought home the Big Ten title in that event. The All-American was the recipient of the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement Award his freshman season. Sullivan also won the mile at Big Tens with a record and placed third . at NCAAs. Sullivan was also the Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year last year, and represented Canada in the Commonwealth Games in the 1500, finishing second. Men's track takes Central Cleits By Brian Sklar Daily Sports Nriter It wasn't too difficult, but the Michigan men's track and field team came away from the Central Colle- giate Championships on Saturday with the one thing it wanted - a victory. The Wolverines placed first in a field of 15 schools, which included Eastern Michigan, Notre Dame, and Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Purdue. Michigan scored 135.5 total points and finished with a comfort- able lead over second place Eastern Michigan, which scored 103 points. Michigan State came in third (79 points) and Purdue placed fourth (69 points). In the distance events, Michigan's Ian Forsyth won the 5000-meter run, finishing with a time of 14:28.66. Dwayne Fuqua also won his event, the 600-meter run, with a time of 1:20.26. Fuqua finished just ahead of Central Michigan's Tarrieck Mitchell, who recorded a time of 1:20.33. Kevin Sullivan, coming off a record-setting 3:55.90 mile last week- end at Notre Dame, finished first in the mile again with a time of 4:08.61. Sullivan said he was happy to win the event, but not so pleased with his performance. "I won the mile but it wasn't very competitive," he said. "I'm a little disappointed with how I ran. I was a little flat and had a bit of a mental letdown. I'm not really sure what was wrong." Sullivan also competed in the 800- meter run. He finished second behind Eastern Michigan's Paul McMullen with a time of 1:52.72 In the sprinting events, Michigan's Trinity Townsend came away with a first-place finish and time of 47.90 in the 400-meter dash. Townsend, who last week at Illinois provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in March, was also somewhat unhappy with his performance Saturday. "I was disappointed," said Townsend. "But, under the circum- stances, I wasn't totally bummed. There was no competition." Townsend was also part of the victorious 4x400 meter relay team, which included Fuqua, Edzra Gibson and Todd Burnham. The team fin- ished with a time of 3:16.40 and was followed by second-place Michigan State (3:17.17) and third-place East- ern Illinois (3:18.36). In the event, the sprinters had a problem with running a smooth race because there was some contact between them. "I was disappointed at the offi- cials," said Townsend. "There was a little bumping and pushing, but they let it go. Everyone pulled weight." trivia Answe The Wolverines also had success in the field events Michigan's Jon Royce narrowly beat Toledo's Henry Patterson and won the highjump with a mark of 7-feet, 3 inches. Wolverine Ben Ludka finished third with a jump of 6 feet, 10-1/4 inches. The triple jump was won b Michigan's Neil Gardner, wh* jumped 50-feet, 10 inches. Jeff Brandenburg of Western Michigan won the shot put with a 59 feet, 7-1/2 inches throw. He was followed by Michigan's Chris Lancaster, who re- corded a throw of56 feet, 4-3/4 inches. The team's next meet is Saturday - at Eastern Michigan. The Wolverines see their performance this weekend as a positive step in their direction..I "The team competed really well and everything is coming together for us," Sullivan said. .4 I m v Michigan set an overtime record in its 1983-84 season, when the Wolverines went into overtime 11 times. This season, the team has racked up 5 OTs and gone 3-1-1 in games that have gone to overtime. 0" JO STENS I no L~- uty na l Ult WulS '.t%.4* VI t::-;Otqj* 40
