Experts report the study suggests that the country's drug problem might be on the brink of worsening. The study revealed that 32 percent of teenagers interviewed in 1993 said they thought smoking marijuana once or twice posed a great risk, down from 36 percent in 1991. Lee P. Brown, director of the Of- fice on Drug Control Policy, said the shift in attitudes was especially trou- bling. "What we're looking at is a potential problem with another genera- tion experiencing a drug epidemic," Brown said. A decline in marijuanause had been apparent among all age levels, includ- ing college students, until these recent findings. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that 60 percent of high school seniors in 1979 admitted to us- ing marijuana, while 47 percent of the 1990 class made this admission. Although marijuana use had been declining, the potency of marijuana has increased drastically. The institute reported that during the past decade, the concentration of THC, marijuana's active agent, has increased from .05 percent in 1979 to a present estimate of 15 percent. Some University students said they are not surprised by the recent rise in drug use. LSA sophomore Jeff Black said he believes the trend in will rise. "I'm surprised that the statistics don't re- veal a much greater use of drugs," Black said. "In a few years, I think this country will experience a dramatic in- crease in drug use, especially in the younger age groups." Black said he feels the use of drugs by college students is a phase in the life of a student. "I thinkmost students who abuse drugs now will probably stop using them once they have finished school," Black said. Other University students said the country's "war on drugs" is a losing battle. "It seems that every party that I go to, a large percentage of the people are not only drinking, but are on some type of drug," said an LSA junior, who $3000 SCHOLARSHIP for 95-96 for a soph. woman eligible for financial aid, GPA 3.3 or better. University Counseling Services, 3100 Michigan Union, 764-8312. wished to remain anonymous. She said the availability of drugs on campus is quite high. "Whenever I need some drugs, I really don't have a hard time getting what I need." The University has recognized the problem. The Student Policy on Alco- hol and Other Drugs states, "There can be no question that alcohol and drug abuse is a significant problem on our campus." Other findings include: *300 tons of cocaine are sold each year in the United States. 8.7 percent of the high school class of 1990 used LSD, while 9.7 percent reported using cocaine, and only 1.3 percent used heroin. * 25 percent of all AIDS victims are intravenous drug users. - The Associated Press contributed to this report. Strike leaves Tigers unable to build stadium DETROIT (AP) - The baseball because of the strike, we're not able to specify how much, strike has left the Detroit Tigers unable to pay for the construction of a new stadium, the club's new president said. "Idon't want to say thatit would be entirely publicly financed," John McHale told the Detroit Free Press in yesterday's editions. "But my discussions with (Tigers owner Mike)Ilitch clearly indicate that go forward with the previously an- nounced project." Ilitch had pledged $175 million to- ward construction of a stadium - if the state or city cleared the land and built roads. But the Aug. 12strike cut the 1994 season short. It has hurt the team's finances, McHale said. He declined to Now, stadium funding would have tobe "something in between"the team's paying the full cost and taxpayers pay- ing to build it. "The club has to expect to be asked to do its fair share," he said. Most stadium projects require pri- vate and public financing. There is no current estimate for a Detroit stadium, McHale said. ** 2 FEMALES NEEDED to share a very cute 4 bdrm. house on Hill. Fully furn., modem kitch. 2 full baths, ldry.
