FACULTY
Continued from page 1
Ransom said the University also
must look to improve the climate on
campus.
"It's not Eden, but it's not hell ei-
ther," Ransom said.
Ransom cited faculty mentoring and
studentperceptionsof minority instruc-
tors as areas that need improvement.
"White students need to see minori-
ties in positions of responsibility so
when they see a Black man walking
down the street they don't immediately
,assume that he is a serial rapist," he
asserted.
Art Prof. Mignonette Cheng, an
Asian American, said the progress and
climate with respect to minorities var-
ies among units at the University. Cheng
said she is pleased with results in the
School of Art, which has a new Black
dean at its helm.
"I think that the School of Art on
record has been doing as good as pos-
sible," she said. "They've always been
very supportive."
She said the school has not hired
faculty members recently, but there
will soon be several openings.
"I am sure that they are going to do
the best they can to recruit minorities,"
she said.
Of the current 3,791 faculty at the
University, 6.9 percent are Asian, 4.4
percent are Black, 2.5 percent are His-
panic and0.2 percent are NativeAmen-
can.
