Approximately 400 students from midwestern high schools will gather together at the Law school, each representing adelegateofanothercoun- try, at the annual conference. LSA senior Bridget Moore, coordi- nator of the University's conference, said, "The participants learn to under- stand and work with one another dis- cussing world issues. They also im- prove their public speaking skills." Before the conference, each par- ticipant was assigned to represent a specific country. The young partici- pants were assigned to a specific com- mittee and asked to write a position paper concerning topics ranging from child labor laws to the situation in Rwanda, diplomatic immunity to vio- lence against women. Throughout the rest of the week, students will divide into subcommit- tees based on the organization of the real United Nations. The student delegates must put their communication skills to the test. They debate world issues, offer views on how to solve these problems and try to reach a compromise. To close the debate, a two-thirds vote is needed to issue a United Nations resolution. JUDITH PERKINS/Daily A student participating in the Model United Nations casts a vote yesterday. Representing Ireland, junior Michael Trupiano from Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills said, "As awhole, it is a great opportunity for high school students to get involved in world and foreign politics. This in turn allows the youth of today to develop into the future leaders of tomorrow." John Tims, a senior from Plymouth Canton High School said, "The con- ference is helpful in developing inter- acting skills. You just can't blurt out what you want. You plan your strate- gies - in other words, you learn the constraints of the system." This is the University's seventh year sponsoring the conference. The conference began last night with an opening ceremony and will continue until Sunday at Hutchins Hall. SPRING BREAK - S. Padre on beach. 2-3 bdrms. at famous Radisson.
