Cranes, "Loved" Jennifer Buckley's Top 10 Albums 1. REM, "Monster." Survival through reinvention. Achtung, Michael. Bril- *iant. 2. Hole, "Live Through This." Kurt may not have, but Courtney certainly did, with a howling vengeance. And we are a better world for it. 3. Freedy Johnston, "This Perfect World." Gorgeous pop vignettes strung together like a pearl necklace. Each and every bead is priceless. 4. Come, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Devastatingly, insidiously beautiful. 5. Liz Phair,"Whip-Smart." Not quite "Exile in Guyvillie," but it has brains, beauty, and considerably more elec- tric brawn ("Supernova," "Jealousy") than her debut. 6. Guided By Voices, "Bee Thou- sand." Kind of like the Beatles with a vacuum cleaner running in the back- ground. 7. Pavement, "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain." Sloppy genius of Stockdon slackerdom. 8. Luscious Jackson,"Natural Ingre- dients." So you say you wanna party? Well, then, let yourself get down. 9. Sugar,"File Under: Easy Listen- ing." Bob Mould is NOT deaf. 10. Afghan Whigs, "Gentlemen." Breaking up is never easy to do. "Gentlemen"'s songs are the nastiest excerpts on CD. And you thought Ohio was a cultural abyss! David Cook's Top 10 Albums Beastie Boys, "Ill Communication" Helmet, "Betty" Gonzalo Rubalcaba, "Diz" Black Crowes, "Amorica" James Carter, "JC On The Set" Superchunk, "Foolish" Dada, "American Highway Flower" Green Day, "Dookie" Soundgarden, "Superunknown" Brand New Heavies, "Brother Sister" Mark Carlson's Top 10 Albums - 1. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Question The Answers." So good ,I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. 2. Big Chief, "Platinum Jive." Home town boys make good and pre- pare to rock the shit out of the rest of of the world. 3. Seal, "Seal." Wow. 4. Nine Inch Nails, "The Down- ward Spiral." Oooh, scary. 5. Bad Religion, "Stranger Than Fiction." In a day of punk rock mania, these guys still rock harder than any- one. A consistently good album from a consistently good band. 6. Smashing Pumpkins, "Pisces Iscariot." Yeah, it's just b-sides, but the Pumpkins prove here that even their throwaways are great. 7. Sunny Day Real Estate, "Diary" 8. Prince, "Come." O.K., so he's having some problems relating to the human race, but this is still a great album. Besides his "royal" vocals, Come is full of great horns, organs, and other, er, embellishments. 9. Pearl Jam, "Vitalogy." A per- fect example of what they can do if they stop trying so hard to be cool, and just rock out. 10. Blues Traveler, "Four." Ev- eryone spends all their time drooling over band leader John Popper's.har- monica playing, but people tend to forget that he is also one of the best rock singer/lyricists around right now. Kirk J. Miller's Top 10 Albums 1. Bad Religion, "Stranger Than Fic- tion." Bad Religion win almost in spite of themselves; their lead singer is an idiot, their best songwriter and lead guitarist just quit, and they re- made an old song of theirs to get a hit (much like Whitesnake did in the '80s). But hey, that doesn't mean the album isn't catchy, fast and well- produced. 2. Cop Shoot Cop, "Release" 6. The Beatles, "Live At The BBC" 7. Morrissey, "Vauxhall and I" 8. (three-way tie) Primal Scream, "Give Out But Don't Give Up" The Black Crowes, "Amorica" The Rolling Stones, "Voodoo Lounge" Tom Erlewine's Top 10 Albums 1. Pavement, "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" 2. Morrissey, "Vauxhall and I" 8. Suede, "Dog Man Star" 9. Sugar, "File Under Easy Listen- ing" 10. Liz Phair, "Whip-Smart" 11. R.E.M.. "Monster" 12. Blur, "Parklife" 13. Portishead, "Dummy" 14. Frank Black, "Teenager of the Year" Brian A. Gnatt's Top 10 Albums 1. Hole, "Live Through This" 2. Green Day, "Dookie," Middle school girls may really dig it, but it is a great album. 3. Bad Religion, "Stranger Than Fic- tion" 4. Velocity Girl, "Simpatico" 5. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, "Ques- tion The Answers" 6. Soundgarden, "Superunknown" 7. Rancid, "Let's Go." Bro of Billie Joe from Green Day. Wouldn't you love to see their parents? 8. Mark Lanegan, "Whiskey For The Holy Ghost." Screaming Trees guy doing great mellow shit. 9. Black Crowes, "Amorica." God bless it. 10. Black Train Jack, "You're Not Alone" The Black Crowes are surprising.
