TO THE DAILY CLASSIFIED STAFF: Thanks for a wonderful year of dedication and enthusiasm. I will miss you all this summer! Nancy. CODE Continued from page 1 I "I haven't made a decision y Newman said yesterday. "I wa hear what people have to say."" Newman said she will be meeting separately with Hartford and MSA President Flint Wainess to hear the each side's views. Anne Marie Ellison, chair of the MSA Students' Rights Commission, said SAC will try to inform these new regents of the code's problems. "We will be in the meetings trying to persuade the administration That this regulation is a truly flawed docu- ment, one that's really not functional or right," she said. Duderstadt said there will always be some student opposition to apy University action. "This is a campus of 37,000 stl dents, and I'm sure that in any cam- pus of 37,000, there will be some who are unhappy," Duderstadt said 1f has been through quite a consentu building process. We try to be atte* tive to what people's concerns a and respond the best that we can."'- Regent Laurence Deitch (t- Bloomfield Hills), who voted last April to keep the policy in an intern state, said he does not know how be will vote. "I haven't made up mind on it," he said. The amendments to the code w proposed in January when a quo of student panelists - students ra- domly selected and trained in code procedures- met to consider ame0'- ments to the policy. The Office T Student Affairs had failed to attrat the 26 of 50 panelists needed to amne the code in three previous hearing, One of the amendments createsan "Advisor Corps" for the purpose of advising students who are involvedit code proceedings. Vince Keenan, former chair of t MSA Students' Rights Commissi n said the assembly supports this amcni - ment, "We do not want this policy. We find it unacceptable," he said. "But at the same time, we have to recoglize that there are students being fored through this policy, and we can' ig- nore those students. We need to wrv within the policy to make it as just as' possible for as long as we have to deal with it." Hartford said Advisor Corps could be beneficial for students accused under the code, if the students, i- volved are motivated to help others. not to advance agendas. "A lot depends on the quality qf the students involved," she said. ' they're heavily political students with agendas, they could do some damage to the students involved if they are using them to move forward soie sort of political stance. If they ge truly in it in a support role to prov e a safety net in what is always a hig y stressful situation, I think it could be a benefit." - Another of the revisions the pan.- elists suggested deals with the 3Q, mile radius contained in the code. A itstands now, studentscan becharged under the code for offenses that hap- pen anywhere within a 30-mile radius of campus. The revision would re move the 30-mile radius. But this sparked concern among students that lifting the radius might provide the code with an infinite range of governance. "We tried to narrow it down to just campus. By calling in the 30-mile radius, we are told we opened it upto be bigger than 30 miles," Keenan said. Another proposed change deals with the amendment process itself. Under the present procedure, a ma- jority of the 50 panelists must be present at a meeting for amendments to be considered. The proposed revi- sion would lower that number to 21. Keenan objected to this amend- ment because it was not presented during the open portion of the amend- ment meeting. "The change from 26 to 21 (panel- ists) didn't follow the process. It was part of very secretive administrative government," Keenan said. "The pan- elists don't know best what the rules of our community should be." MSA and the Office of Student Affairs had jointly proposed chang- ing the amendment procedure to pro- vide a student referendum on amend: ments. "I think the proposal we made jointly with MSA would have been innovative and different, but I can live comfortably with what the stu- dent panel proposed," Hartford said.
