DETROIT (AP) -- A Christmas
tree ornament that doubles as a smoke
alarm is showing strong sales at some
retailers this year; The manufacturer
calls it a breakthrough in fighting the
seasonal fire threat, but some fire
officials are skeptical.
The Natale is a spherical translu-
cent ball that looks like an ordinary
Christmas tree decoration. It is pow-
ered by a nine-volt battery. When
triggered, it emits a 75-decibel tone.
"We think the advance warning of
having a smoke detector right on the
tree will help save lives," said Anthony

Savalle, president of manufacturer
Quadra Linc Corp. of Troy. Some fire
officials note that the ornament lacks
approval from Underwriters Laborato-
ries, a product-safety testing group.
"This apparently was marketed in
haste," said Detroit Fire Capt. Lee
Moore. "They wanted to get it out on
the market and didn't want to go through
the process of getting it approved."
Savalle said the Natale doesn'tcarry
an Underwriters Laboratories seal be-
cause it isn't designed to survive 60
seconds of fire. Should a tree catch fire,
it would be destroyed more quickly.
