While Steel Pulse has had some criticism for diluting their music, Hinds believes the practice is a neces- sary evil. "I admire Shabba Ranks and all of the stuff he has done," said .inds. "I don't think he is a sellout cause I don't think the musical de- cisions are really up to Shabba Ranks. The decisions are made by the Ameri- can audiences and what they want to hear. The truth be known, reggae has still yet to be accepted in its purest "ense. Whether it's dance hall or tra- ditional reggae, it always has to be married with rap or R&B ... You Oould say (Shabba Ranks) sold out, Ut if he did not take the direction he ook we would not have heard from other DJs like Supercat or Tommy Rebel. I have to tip my hat to Shabba Ranks." Dahl's 'Last Seduction'is slick, sharp and instantly attractive By SCOTT PLAGENHOEF The old sexist credo states that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Yet, according to Bridget Gregory, the femme fatale of John Directed 1k+ by John Dahl; with Linda Fiorentino and Peter Berg. to hide out until she can safely begin to spend her new wealth. While in the small town ofBeston, she meets a naive rustic whose at- tempt at life in Buffalo had gone awry, goes right for the crotch within five minutes of meeting and subsequently has him at her bidding. Following the enjoyable yet mas- sively overhyped "Red Rock West," which came to Ann Arbor this sum- mer, John Dahl's latest attempt at revitalizing the noir film fares much better. Whereas "Red Rock West" abandoned the typical noir setting of the dimly lit streets and bars of the big city for the open plain, "The Last Seduction" centers its tale of deceit, sex, and revenge in the proverbial "Small Town USA." Whereas "Red Rock" was much more of a cookie-cutter film, the ap- peal lying in the gimmick of replant- ing the noir characteristics, "The Last Seduction" is appealing on a much more genuine level. The characters are richer, the storyline is less forced, and the acting is much more dynamic. The film's one major flaw is a cheap plot device which serves to reinvolve Bill Pullman's character in the search for his wife and, more importantly, the money she has re- cently taken from him. Unlike most of Pullman's work, once he is stepped on and discarded by a woman, he gets the opportunity to fight back. In the process, despite the way in which he enters the chase, Pullman displays a versatility well beyond the "aw shucks" chumps he is usually stuck portraying. The intelligence of Pullman, de- spite being double-crossed, is a per- fect foil for the uncompromising cluelessness of Peter Berg. Berg's character postures himself as a big fish in the small pond of Beston; yet Bridget proves that he has no place amidst the big city. His old-fashioned, Mayberry lifestyle clouds him from the possibility that people can be truly nasty, particularly when money is in- volved. His starry-eyed dream of liv- ing with Bridget in New York clouds him from the reality that she is simply yanking him around by the crotch to relieve the boredom of Beston. It is the strength and thought with which the three main characters are written which elevates "The Last Se- duction" above the typical Hollywood suspense thriller. Generally, there are only two types of characters: the good and the bad. Here the lines are crossed. The only character who really attempts to keep some semblance of school and church taught morality is the least likable and is set up for potentially the biggest fall, while the protagonist is a conniving, yet extremely likable, bitch. Slick and sharp, "The Last Seduc- tion" is an almost instantly attractive yarn. The credit, however, may not lie with Dahl, as much as with Rick Barancik's script. Whereas Dahl penned the predictable overkill of "RedRock West," Barancik kept "The Last Seduction" in check and Fiorentino, Berg and Pullman took care of the rest. THE LAST SEDUCTION is cur- rently playing at the Michigan. E 'I Dahl's latest rural noir, the way to a man's brain is still through his pants. Bridget (portrayed delightfully by Linda Fiorentino) is a conniving, film noir femme to rival even some of Rita Hayworth or Barbara Stanwyck's characters. After double crossing her husband (Bill Pullman) for a cache of one-time drug money, the decidedly very-big city Bridget escapes upstate .. .._ NOT GOING HOME for Thanksgiving?
