The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, November 21, 1994 -- 5 9 A H 6 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Wolverines' helmets stolen before final game By RACHEL BACHMAN Daily Football Writer COLUMBUS - Is this what they call stealing victory? Five Michigan helmets were stolen from the visiting locker room at Ohio Stadium Friday night, prior to Saturday's game against Ohio State, the Associated Press reported. The helmets belonged to tailback Tyrone Wheatley, quarterback Todd Collins, tight end Jay Riemersma, wide receiver Amani Toomer and backup quarterback Scott Dreisbach. Michigan sports information director Bruce Madej said the Wolverines always carry extra helmets. "We bring six or maybe eight helmets along on the road, but I don't know how many we brought here," Madej said. "The biggest problem is size and style." He added that Toomer wears a specific style helmet, which couldn't be replaced on short notice. Wheatley, whose helmet was stolen twice last week from Schembechler Hall in Ann Arbor, appealed for the equipment's return. "Please, whoever took my helmet, give it back," he said after the game. Wheatley was forced to use a smaller helmet against the Buckeyes. As a result, he continued, "I got hit on the top of the head and I was dizzy." The police said there was no; forced entry into the locker room. Michigan equipment manager Jon a Falk said the helmets were taken K between 4 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. Saturday. "The investigation will look into who has access to the room between those hours," Falk said. "We will also be keeping an eye out for five Michigan helmets." A NEW WOLVERINE-BUCKEYE "STREAK": For the second straight appearance of Ohio State and Michi- gan at Ohio Stadium, one event has / amused and surprised fans. It's not' Wolverine Marching Bandk\. conductor's Gary Lewis's show, ms I or even the Buckeye Marching . Band's dotting of the 'i' in "Ohio." x *A .. r< -_:.. It's the appearance of a streaker Walsh at halftime.w Saturday, a naked man with the words "Go Bucks" gracing his body dashed across the field, pausing only to mimic the Heisman Trophy pose. Daniel John Walsh, of Harrisonburg, Va., a James Madison sopho- more, was charged with criminal trespass and public indecency for his run. A sheriff's deputy said Walsh was in the Franklin County Jail Saturday night. The deputy identified himself as D. Marshall, refusing to give his first name. Two years ago, a nude man ran across midfield just before the end of the Wolverine-Buckeye game's halftime show. Apparently, the two incidents - and runners - are unrelated. A TEARY WAY TO END THE SEASON: As the last minutes ticked off the scoreboard clock Saturday, members of Ohio State's student section filed toward the field in jubilation. Several score state troopers awaited them. When the fans rushed the south goalpost, the officers used what they called "chemical tear gas" on them. Students retaliated by throwing divots of turf at the police. Some of the perpetrators were handcuffed to net poles behind the goalpost, awaiting formal arrest. The goalpost stayed up, but numerous people had to be treated for eye, nose and mouth irritation from the spray. During the melee, members of the media and even Michigan safety Chuck Winters caught eyefuls of the liquid. FIRE UP! IT'S SATURDAY: Six days before Michigan's 22-6 loss to the Buckeyes, Collins had this to say about the team's performance this season: "The thing that bothers me the most is we get flat out there when things don't go our way. We let our guard down and don't fight as hard. "We can't let that happen this week." NO LACK OF EMOTION THERE: After Ohio State's win over the Wolver- ines, the Buckeyes began to realize the gravity of their feat. Running back Eddie George sat on an interview room table, grinning from ear to ear. "This is something that nobody can ever take away from me," he said. "I'm tickled pink." Ris coach's reaction? "It doesn't get any better than this." But the real superlative belonged to quarterback Bobby Hoying, who said, "This is the best day of my life." - The Associated Press contributed to this report.
