"People could not believe Asian
Americans face racism. We are a
model minority," she said, referring
to the stereotype of Asian Americans
as excelling in society while not com-
plaining about racism.
"We have kids that are not good at
math. We're not all shopkeepers in
Black neighborhoods, and as long as
people view us as this, we're not go-
ing to break free," Zia said.
She praised the work of main-

stream Asian American women such
as comedian Margaret Cho, whose
stand-up acts and new sitcom, "All-
American Girl," challenge the quiet,
intelligent stereotype often given to
Asian Americans.

els) are everywhere. Our challenge is
to find them and spread the word,"
