The one constant in the Big Ten is the success of Indiana. The Hoosiers are in the thick of the conference race every year and this season Bobby Knight once again has an impressive unit. Forward Alan Henderson returns to Bloomington for his senior season with high expectations. The 6-foot-9 veteran will be the main focus of the Indiana basketball spotlight for the first time in his career. Those who know Hoosier Indiana hoops know the 12-6, 21-9 intense amount of pressure Henderson will be under. "How we use Henderson and how we have to use Henderson is dependent on what these other Away: January 24 guys do," Knight Home: February19 said. "I really don't in particu- lar want to have Henderson defend- ing in the post. I'd like to get Henderson into a position where he can play with as much freedom and being able to use him in as many ways as possible." Henderson has been inconsistent in his career but had a very strong finish to his 1993-94 campaign. Unlike his All- Big Ten counterparts in Minneapolis (Voshon Lenard) and Madison (Rashard Griffith and Michael Finley), Henderson will have a great amount of support on both offense and defense. Junior forward Brian Evans aver- aged 12 points per game last season and is an outstanding complement to Henderson. He shot 47 percent from 3-point land last year. "Evans can be an exceptionally good basketball player," Knight said. "I compare Evans to Ted Williams in the outfield, figuring out which pitch he was going to hit the next time at bat. I'm not so sure that on defense Evans isn't occassionally thinking about where the hell his next shot is going to come from. "If we can get him to pay attention to what the hell he is doing on defense it would be an enormous help to us as well as to Brother Evans." Knight anticipates the six freshmen Bloomington can help end of the floor. They [ ness as a group and Kn they are hard workers, The recruits are Patterson, a 6-foot-8 Abilene, Texas. Gophers welcome back Lenard Marc 5 8 12 With five seniors, including three returning starters, Minnesota looks to be in the thick of things again in the Big Ten race. Among those returners is a player the Golden Gophers thought they lost early to the NBA. After being selected in the second round by the Milwaukee Bucks, Voshon Lenard decided to pass up the NBA and return to college for another year. In doing so, he has the chance to go after a Minnesota all-time record and lead the Gophers into the postseason for the fourth straight year. "We're very excited about having Voshon back," Haskins said. "He's got a chance to become the all-time leading scorer at Minnesota."
