26 - Tipoff '94 - Thursday, November 17, 1994 0 I 0 ILLINOIS Continued from page 8 the first conference rookie to perform such a feat. "I thought Kiwane did a tremen- dous job last year," Illinois coach Lou Henson said. "Now, he didn't always have great games, young guys don't. They're gonna play su- per one game and may not so well the next. I think Kiwane is going to have a good year. We feel good about our personnel." Fueling Henson's optimism is a stellar recruiting class. College Sports ranked the Fighting Illini's incoming freshmen as the 18th best in the nation. Illinois made a killing off Chicago prep players, signing 6- foot-4 guard Bryant Notre and 6- foot-7 "forward Jerry Gee. Notree wasn't expected to be a contributor right away - he was declared ineligible in the preseason for not having met NCAA core class standards while in high school. How- ever, he was cleared to play earlier this month. Gee is needed to make an immediate impact up front, with the loss of Thomas, Illinois' career scoring leader. Clark and Robert Bennett are the probable starters. Clark was a double-digit scorer who was lim- ited by foul-trouble. Bennett can help out by cleaning off the glass. The backcourt appears solid with Garris and Keanne. However they are the only returning guards, with two first-year players filling out the bench. - Scott Burton 94 .u*...I..t I Ta rv. . - . . ... "That's not a good rule for college athlet- ics," Haskins Away: February 4 said. Lenard was the Big ten's third-leading scorer last season with 21.6 points per game and was a second team All-Big Ten selection. MINNESOTA SPORTS INFORMATION Voshon Lenard's reach this season. "It really helps to have a guy like him back in your program," Haskins said. "It increases our chances to get back to postseason play." Joining Lenard in the backcourt is fifth-year senior Townsend Orr, who averaged 9.9 ppg and 3.3 as- sists per game a year ago. The two- some give the Gophers one of the most formidable backcourts in the conference, if not the country. Se- nior Ryan Wolf will back up both guard positions. Seniors dominate the frontcourt for Minnesota as well. Chad Kolander (6.8 ppg, 3.9 rebounds per game) and Jayson Walton (7.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) along with junior David Grim (6.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg) make up the rest of the Gophers' starting unit. - Antoine Pitts ILLINOIS SPORTS INFORMATION The Fighting ini need rebounding help this season from Robert Bennett, as well as Shelley Clark, if they wish to contend for the Big Ten title.
