He took an te a look at inbounds pass from Ray Jackson and slammed home the first points of his * a Michigan career. Ward led all the fresh- now men with 16 points. Taylor finished with 14 points, Mitchell with nine, Baston knocked good a down eight and Conlan had two. Fisher was cautiously pleased about Ig to the performance of his recruits, and his team in general. "There were sparks from all of our Fisher new kids," Fisher said. "I think that ketball maybe we got a little bit lazy thinking that 'Maybe if I can get out there, I can coach get the dunk."' Fisher also noted the team's early defensive intensity. "We probably took as many charges in the first half tonight as we did in the first half of last season," he said. For all the hoopla surrounding Fisher's latest No. 1 recruiting class, the Wolverines were led by a familiar face. Senior Jimmy King was the top scorer in the game with 22 points in- cluding three three-pointers. Poland was led by 6-foot-7 guard Adam Wojcik who made all three of the three-point shots that he took and finished with 19 points. Poland spent last week on the east coast losing games to Maryland, Vir- ginia, North Carolina State and Duke, and King said that they looked tired out on the court. Fisher wasn't happy with what he called a lack of intensity at times, but admitted that it was atough game to get up for., "I looked up and I couldn't tell who eight was and who nine was on the other team," he said. Poland did manage to keep the game close for a while. With 8:56 left in the first half the Wolverines were only up by a point, 27-26. Michigan then went on a 12-2 run that putitahead by double digits for good. The night. howe er, belonged to the Wolverines iate't gr up of five. "We're going to be 3 good team," Fisher said. "Right now we're just ask- ing ourselves, 'How good a team are we going to be'?' BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK By ANTOINE PITTS Daily Basketball Writer Before the regular season has even begun, the Michigan men's basketball team has been hit with a pair of injuries. Two players are now out indefinitely, but Michigan coach Steve Fisher need not worry about it depleting his bench. Sophomore guard Bobby Crawford and forward Olivier Saint-Jean will both be out of action for at least the next month, but there are plenty of able bodies to take their places in the rotation in the meantime. The Wolverines found out Tuesday that Crawford will need four to six weeks I1o recuperate from a torn medial collatoral ligament in his right knee that he suffered in practice last week, Saint-Jean is still recovering from off-season knee surgery and there is a question whether or not he will play at all this season. More will be known on his condition the first week of December. Unlike last season when the Wolverines had just seven scholarship players at the beginning of the year, Fisher has more than enough players already on the bench. Nine Wolverines saw action against the Polish National Team and Fisher hopes to use as many players or more as the season moves on. "We probably plan to play all the guys you saw tonight plus Bobby and 4!livier when they come back," Fisher said. "We've got lots of bodies that we want to utilize. "I'm not used to going with 10 players. I'll try to play everyone fewer minutes and get more people in there." With Crawford out, freshman guard Travis Conlan will be asked to come in to back up Dugan Fife at the point guard slot. "Stuff happens and people need to step up," Conlan said. "This is my chance." ON FOREIGN SOIL: With last night's victory over Poland, the Wolverines kept their perfect record against teams from different countries intact. Michi- gan has also defeated national teams from Australia, Cuba, Russia, Croatia *ind the Ukraine in exhibitions. The only exhibition loss on the Wolverines' record came two seasons ago at the hands of Athletes in Action. After Michigan returns from Hawaii, it plays one more exhibition Nov. 28 against High Five America. How MUCH LONGER CAN THEY Go?: The first game of the season gave Michigan's freshmen their first time to strut their stuff in front of the Crisler Arena fans. It also gave them a chance to get used to the long, baggy uniforms that have come to symbolize Michigan and the rest of college basketball for the past few seasons. Jerod Ward remarked at last month's media day that he felt the long horts might get in the way of his knees and bother him. Several of the WVolverines looked like they had enough material in their uniforms to clothe a whole family. "I didn't order them, but they're all right as long as we win," Conlan said. "The shorts are really baggy and the shirts come out of them a lot."
