ANN ARBOR (AP) -Gov. John
Engler helped hospital staff move the
"first triplets" from the intensive care
unit to their mother's room yesterday,
steering one bassinet himself.
The governor said at a news con-
ference at the University Medical
Center he and his wife, Michelle, have
been getting plenty of instruction on
the details of baby business in prepa-
ration for their first night alone with
their new family.
"The big test is to have them arrive
in our room and see if we can make it
through the night without calling
emergency help," he joked.
It's likely all three babies will go
home when Mrs. Engler leaves the
hospital later this week. "They've
done very, very well for premature

births. The three of them, they're
meeting all their tasks, I guess," the
governor said.
The babies, born Sunday by
Caesarean section, are all starting to
breastfeed, he said. The girls were
about six weeks early.
So far, hospital staff have taught
the Englers feeding, burping and hold-
ing babies. Still to come is a class on
bathing infants.
"They all look a little bit different
to me. They've all got their own little
personalities already, I think. This
could just be a proud father talking,"
Engler said, calling them "three re-
markable young women."
"They all entered the world kind of
like, 'Yeah, here I am,"' he said, hold-
ing his hands out wide beside his head.
