8- The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, November 14, 1994 HOCKEY NOTEBOIJK By DARREN EVERSON Daily Hockey Writer The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry usually brings out the best in both teams. Not coincidentally, it always seems to bring out the worst in individual players, as off-ice Wolverine-Spartan friendships have to be set aside. Jason Botterill and Anson Carter are one such pair. The Wolverine center and Spartan winger played junior hockey together in Canada, winning a gold medal in the process. That teamwork seems hard to believe, though, with the way the two tangled after play had been stopped during Friday's game. The tussle proved just what the rivalry can do to people. "That's truein any rivalry, but especially Michigan-Michigan State," Botterill said. "This is a big game for both teams and you can talk about things and have a good time after the game. "But out there on the ice it's war against everybody." Likewise, Carter wasn't all too worried about what took place. "We get along great off the ice, but (the scuffle) isjust the rivalry," Carter said. "Anytime you put on the Green & White sweater and face Michigan it's going to be like that." PINE TIME: Michigan right wing Mike Knuble earned apoint in the first period against Bowling Green, assisting on Brendan Morrison's power-play goal. This is especially noteworthy because it could be his last point in a little while. chigan-Michigan StateWMEB HOCKEY POLL Team Points Last Week S fnen s1.Michgn (1)37 6 ns inito foes2. Cross country runs second at Purdue meet 0 0 0t .. 1 ~to Men's team bestedl By CHAIM HYMAN Daily Sports Writer Coming off a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships last weekend, the Michigan men's cross country team competed in the NCAA District IV Championships at Purdue Saturday. The Wolverines needed to finish in one of the top three spots in order to qualify for next week's NCAA Championships at Arkansas. The team finished second overall, with three runners placing in the top 10. Michigan again fell victim to Wisconsin, which has now kept it out of the top spot in the last two meets. The Wolverines earned 55 points, fall- ing short of the Badgers' 33. All-American sophomore Kevin Sullivan led Michigan's individual runners by placing first with a time of 30 minutes, 31 seconds. This is the second straight year that Sullivan has won the 10-kilometer meet. "I'm very pleased with how the race turned out," Sullivan said. "As a team we ran well again and had an- other good performance." Other individual runners included junior All-American Scott MacDonald, who placed fourth in the meet with a time of 30:44. Senior team captain Ian Forsyth came in sixth with a time of 30:52. Improvements were made by Michigan's fourth and fifth spot runners. Junior Theo Molla placed 16th in 31:23, and sophomore Dave Bamett came in 28th, up from his 42nd-place finish at last week's meet, with a time of 31:49. "This was our best race yet for most on the team," Molla said. "We're only improving and hopefully it will show at nationals next week." As for Wisconsin edging out a victory over the Wolverines again, the team has mixed reactions. "Wisconsin is a great team, and 'This was our best race yet for most on the team.' - Theo Molla Michigan runner losing to them is really not a big deal," Sullivan said. "They are beatable and hopefully we'll be able to win over them at nationals." Michigan will be ranked sixth na- tionally coming in to the tournament, while Wisconsin will be No. 2. by Wisconsin again as it prepares for NCAA Championships KAPLAN Educational Center presents: Rochelle Rothstein, M. S: Tyson will be favored in his next fight. If he comes out of prison in Call 1-800-KAP-TEST to shape and gets a tune-up bout, he'd be a huge favorite over Foreman. He'd beat him senseless. Let's say he gets an early re- lease, fights Foreman in 90 days, I'd make him a 8-1 or 10-1 favorite to destroy Foreman. Against other heavyweights, he'd be at least 4-1, 5-1. D: Let's move to the political ring. What are President Clinton's odds to win a second term in office? S: In spite of what you read (about Clinton's popularity), I would not make him an underdog. I think Clinton is even money to be re- elected. I haven't seen any Republicans that (would make great candidates). If the election was held right now, he wouldn't win, but two years is a lot of time. D: Who would be the top Republi- can challengers? S: Jack Kemp would be one of the favorites. He'd be 3:1 against to win the Republican nomination, 5:1 to win the whole thing. Bob Dole 7:1 to % L 'e b) 0. There's a lot of people who could give Clinton a run for the money. D: Colin Powell? S: I think Powell would be an excellent choice at Vice President. I don't think he's electable in 1996 (as President). If he ran Republican, as Vice President, with any legitimate Republican candidate, they'd have a pretty good chance at beating Clinton, close to even. It's not because he's black (that he couldn't run for President), I just don't think the public's perception of a general is the same as when Eisenhower won. Powell would gen- erate more votes than Norman Schwarzkopf. People don't think Powell is as militaristic as Schwarzkopf. Powell would be 100:1 to win the nomination, 500:1 to win the Presidency. Schwarzkopf 250:1 to win the nomination, 1,000:1 to win it all. D: What about Dan Quayle? S: If Quayle was elected, I would leave the United States. I would seri- ously consider leaving the country. I don't want to think about the odds of him winning. f4." Mitch is away on Monday and Tuesday!
