Magic Hour takes you on a trip, By ANDY DOLAN "'No Excess Is Absurd' is the title of the record, so it's kind of taken in a different way than most rock is going today," stated Kate Biggar, guitarist for the seminal New En- gland rock outfit, Magic Hour. Last Year, Biggar and guitarist Wayne Rogers, both of the band Crystallized Movements, got together with Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang, for- merly of Galaxie 500, to create an album that has taken fans of both bands for aroaringly loud yet strangely melodic and even psychedelic trip. At first, this unlikely combination was a bit frightening for fans of both bands. "Here, most people say, 'The Crystallized Movements are playing with Galaxie 500?! What are they doing?!' And then Galaxie 500 fans say, 'What's wrong with them?! What have Kate and Wayne done to them?!' But we like that, it sticks out in our head. But we get along fabulously, we're all very pleased with what's going on. I think Damon and Naomi were looking for a direction like this," Biggar explained. "I would describe it as post-rock, I guess. There's.some pretty long- winded guitar stuff and Naomi's bass playing is beautiful, and it influences everything. Damon attacks the cym- bals and there's lots of guitars and very pouty vocals." However, the heart of Magic Hour's sound lies in their love for improvisation, something that both Galaxie 500 and Crystallized Move- ments had heavily utilized. "Most of it comes out of improvi- sation, or 'jamming' as those in the rock world like to call it," Biggar joked. "Basically, Wayne will say, 'here, Kate, play these screwed-up, fucked-up chords here and Damon, just hit your drums here, and Naomi, just follow along.' Then it evolves from there, because we're free to do whatever the hell we want. From that, things develop and take shape." "Usually, Wayne will bring in a two minute song, and 15 minutes later we're done with it strangling it, which is nice," she continued. "There's a very strong rhythm section, which is great because Wayne and I weren't used to working with such talented individuals they're just really unique and very influencing on our guitars and on the way the song goes, which is a great experience." As the album title also suggests, though, Magic Hour have a tendency to dive into some rather extraordinary indulgences. Many of the songs on "No Excess Is Absurd" top the seven- minute mark, mostly due to several minutes of Rogers' emotionally charged guitar solos. However, the rest of the band also keeps things interesting by throwing their own in- put into the mix. "Wayne doesn't enjoy singing very much, so vocals aren't really the highlight of our set. When they're done, we're like 'Good! Now we can go off on our guitars!"' Biggar said. "Wejust go off and Damon and Naomi just keep following along. It's hard to find people who'll do that!" However, it's Magic Hour's drive to tap into something different within the traditional rock structure that al- lows them to create some of the most impressive and energetic music around. But according to them, it's actually quite a simple idea. "If yo* take a structure and let it loose and let it have more themes going on, it al- lows things to happen, so you can push beyond the two-minute song structure and allow strange things into your music. It's deeply influencing," Biggar explained. "In a way, you just keep playing until you hit something that you haven't done before. That's usually good sign!" It was definitely an instance of the right band meeting the right song at the right place and time. As if this wasn't enough to please the masses, they went on to close the show with their own classic, "A Little Bit Ugly." Dicky, however, didn't seem to re- alize that the show was over, and kept riding the crowd all the way to the back of the building, where he stayed to hang out and sign autographs for good 30 minutes or so. All in all, the Bosstones proved themselves to be some of the best en- tertainers in the music industry, and reaffirmed the fact that a rock show can actually be fun and doesn't always have to be a serious, depressing grunge- fest.
