The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, November 7, 1994 - 7 HOCKEY NOTEBOOK By MELANIE SCHUMAN Daily Hockey Writer It is now official. No senior on the current Lake Superior State squad will ever win a game in Yost Ice X rena. The last time the Lakers won in Ann Arbor was Dec. 14, 1990, a 4-3 victory. Last year, the Wolverines defeated Lake State four times, including a victory in the CCHA finals. Michigan's lone setback to Lake State was a 5-4 overtime loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships last spring. Friday's lopsided victory over Ohio State extended Michigan's win streak against the Buckeyes to 18. The Wolverines' unbeaten streak against them now stands at 21. Ohio State's last victory against Michigan came Nov. 19, 1989, 7-3. * BIG NUMBERS: Entering this weekend's games, confer- ence teams were averaging 7.73 goals per game. Friday's 10-2 Michigan victory contributed to that statistic once again. Since last season, the Wolverines have scored 10-plus goals in four games. During its 28-2-1 start a year ago, Michigan beat Notre Dame, 13-2, in its first league series and later in the campaign, beat Kent, 10-4, and, 10-3, on separate series. The Wolverines also scored 10-plus goals six times luring the 92-93 season, including an 11-1 rout of Michi- gan State and back-to-back 13-goal efforts against Ohio State and Notre Dame in the CCHA playoffs. SOPHOMORE SCORING: Before this weekend's games freshman Bill Muckalt was tied for the team scoring lead with five goals and two assists for seven points. Four other Wolverines also had seven points including freshmen center Robb Gordon. Sophomore Jason Botterill stepped up against Ohio State. He scored a hat trick, assisted on two power play oals, and ended up topping the team leader board with 12 points. For his efforts, Botterill was named the CCHA's Offensive Player of the Week. Also Friday, sophomore Brendan Morrison had one Yost unkind to Lakers, Bucks goal and two assists while sophomore defensemen Blake Sloan, Chris Frescoln and Harold Schock also contrib- uted. Sloan tallied two assists while Frescoln and Schock added one assist apiece. Saturday's game tying and winning goals came off the stick of sophomore John Madden. Sloan's patient pass- ing to Madden helped put the Wolverines up 3-2 with 3:17 left in the third period. "That whole sophomore class has to contribute offen- sively," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "We need balanced scoring. When you look at our scoring last week, freshmen scored six of our eight goals, and you're not going to go very far with that. That's a tribute to the freshmen, but we need all of our lines clicking." Botterill also sees the need for the nine member sopho- more class to raise its level of play. "We view ourselves as leaders on this team," Botterill said. "And I think it's about time we started picking it up - playing both ends of ice, offensively and defen- sively. We're a big part of this team and if our team is going to go anywhere, the nine of us are going to have to step up." TRAILING, SCHMAILING: After being down, 2-1, at the end of the second period, the Wolverines went on to beat Lake Superior, 4-2. This is the first time this season Michigan has won a game when trailing at the end of the first forty minutes. ON THE TUBE: Thus far this season, the Wolverines have already been on PASS three times, twice hosting Colorado College and Saturday's 4-2 win against Lake Superior. PASS Sports extended its contract to include the College Hockey Showcase on Nov. 25-26 and the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 29-30. PASS and Fox's Detroit Red Wing announcers Mickey Redmond and Dave Strader handle play-by-play duties. ESPN2 offered the CCHA a short-term contract, but it did not extend beyond the NHL strike and it already conflicted with PASS's schedule. EVAN PETRIE/Daily Last weekend at Ferris State, Matt Herr and the rest of the freshman class accounted for six goals. This weekend the freshmen were held in check and contributed only two of Michigan's of the eight Wolverine 14 goals. I ;....... .
