The women's squad (9-2 Big Ten, 13-4 overall) came up a little bit short * its quest for a first-ever conference Wtle, ending up in second place. Michi- gan entered the Big Ten Champion- ships as the No.1 seed, but Indiana won the tournament by upending the Wol- verines in the final match, 5-2. "They just seemed to step up and perform better," team member Sarah Cyganiak said. "It just came together for them on that day." Michigan did manage to qualify Or the 20-team NCAA Champion- ship field, but was defeated in the first round. Despite the end-of-the-year set- backs, a few Wolverines garnered postseason honors. Cyganiak won Big Ten Freshman of the Year and she, along with Bojana Jankovic, were named to the All-Big Ten Conference Team. Coach Bitsy Ritt also received aise, as she was named Big Ten Woach of the Year. However, Minnesota won both the title and their 39th-straight Big Ten match by shutting out Michigan, 4-0. The Golden Gophers, the tournament hosts, were the only conference team to beat the Wolverines this season. A week later, 15th-ranked Notre Dame ended Michigan's season at the NCAA Region IV qualifying tourna- ment, beating the Wolverines for the second time this year, 4-0. Michigan's Dan Brakus, the Big Ten Player of the Year, made the NCAA tournament singles division but was knocked out in the first round by the No. 2 seed. IERRINGTON Continued from page 3F still hard to believe. However, an ominous sign has Speared and - for the sake of Gary Moeller's employment - it needs to be stopped. During spring practice in April, many of the players talked about putting 1993 behind them and look- ing to the future. This can only be considered bad news. The Wolverines need to remem- ber 1993 every time they put on their pads between now and November. Eo one on the 100-plus member team should be allowed to forget the pain- ful lessons of last season for only with that knowledge can Michigan pre- vent it from happening again. Every senior - specifically Collins and Wheatley - should be constantly reminding the underclass- men how miserable 1993 was, mak- ing sure that it is not treated as an aberration, but as something that can happen any year that the Wolverines decide to rest on their laurels. It is simply too easy to think, "Well, we've got Collins and Wheatley back, plus the line has a whole year under its belt. We'll be fine." That's what hap- pened to Ohio State in the 1980s and the Buckeyes have not seen the inside of the Rose Bowl in 10 years. Two seasons ago, Moeller put a number five on each player's Rose Bowl watch in an attempt to have them focus on the quest for five straight titles. If I were Moeller, I would do something similar, painting "1993-8-4" on everything in sight so that each and every player under- stands that that type of performance will not be acceptable this year. As the saying goes, those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Moeller won't forget the past, but his players just might. Winning isn't easy and Moeller should be highly commended for hav- ing his first three Wolverine teams win the Big Ten, especially with the pressure of replacing a legend like Bo Schembechler. With the home opener against Boston College just right around the corner and with every player on the sideline being a Moeller recruit, it is even more important for him to show that he can maintain Michigan's winning football tradi- tion. Yes, it is asking a lot of this man (after all he did graduate from Ohio State) but that is just part of coaching at Michigan, where the combination of football and Big Ten champion- ships is considered the rule.
