The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, November 2, 1994 - 11 BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Walk-ons expected to aid in practice By SCOTT BURTON Daily Basketball Writer Adam Jones, Mickey Zitzmann, Chris Fields, Alex Lengeman and Neal Morton may not represent the future of the Michigan men's basket- ball team. But they do represent the future of the Wolverines' practices. The five are non-scholarship ad- ditions to this season's roster. Al- though they will not see an abun- dance of playing time, they will play an active role in practices, drills and scrimmages. Which is certainly a better fate than the 30-plus athletes who com- peted in open tryouts two weeks ago. None of them made the team. Fields, a senior, is a returnee from last year's squad. Lengeman and Morton are transfer students who practiced with the team last year but were not additions to the game-time roster due to NCAA eli- gibility regulations. Jones was recruited by Michigan as a walk-on, and Zitzmann practiced with the team in the preseason. Both players are freshmen. HEALING BODIES: The number of injured bodies has been reduced with sophomore center Makhtar Ndiaye's return to practice yester- day. He sprained his left knee in prac- tice Oct. 24th and was expected to be out for about two weeks. How- ever, he started jogging early this week and ran half-court drills yes- terday. "I was pleasantly surprised that he moved as well as he did in our half- court drill," coach Steve Fisher said. "He was a lot better on his first day back than I thought he would be. So I am encouraged." Freshman forward Maceo Baston is also recovering quickly from an injury. He dislocated his left shoulder Oct. 24th and just got his arm out of a sling this week. Fisher is hopeful that Baston can return to action by Sun- day. THE EARLY RETURNS: So just how have those highly-touted freshmen been doing in their first month of practice? As would be expected with any group of freshmen, they are still learning the intricacies of a college basketball system. Nonetheless, Fisher is enthusiastic about their prospects. "They need to continue to work and listen, but they are going to be good players," Fisher said. "They are trying awful hard and making mistakes and at times getting frus- trated. But most of the time they are com- peting and fighting through mistakes and getting better. "Our Michigan fans are going to enjoy watching these young kids play and grow." PURDUE Continued from page 10 shrugs aside any postseason honors that may come his way. "I don't get caught up in that Coach-of-the Year garbage," he said. "These ties have been a real setback. I'm still gravely frustrated by it. We won't end up with some- thing if we don't win any of these three games." At least he'll have some job secu- rity. VOLLEYBALL Continued from page 10 career high with 25 digs against Pur- due last weekend. Her 17 kills were also a personal best this season. "RECKING" BALL: Darlene Recker, a redshirt freshman from In- diana, also posted career highs in the Purdue match. She blasted 16 kills and an impressive .343 hitting per- centage. WOUNDED WOLVERINES: Sopho- mores Colleen Miniuk and Kristin Ruschiensky, who started matches earlier this season, did not make the road trip last weekend due to inju- ries. Miniuk has a strained rotator cuff and will be examined today. Ruschiensky has a severely sprained ankle. Neither will play in this weekend's matches. Giovanazzi expects to start Smith and Recker, Sarah Jackson or Sh- annon Brownlee, Suzy O'Donnell, Linnea Mendoza and Shareen Luze. EVAN PETRIE/Daiy With the return of center Makhtar Ndiaye from injury, the Wolverines aren't quite as depleted up front. Olivier Saint-Jean and Maceo Baston are still out. Men's Basketball Band Rehearsals Tuesdays, 7 - 8:15 pm t*Women's Basketball Band Rehearsals Tuesdays, 8:30 - 9:45 pm By DARREN EVERSON Daily Hockey Writer The Michigan hockey team's *%)ances for another CCHA title just got a little bit better. Forward Mike Knuble has been cleared to return to play. Knuble will rejoin sophomore Brendan Morrison and junior Kevin Hilton to form the Wolverines' top line and will play this weekend against Ohio State and Lake Supe- rior State. The senior right wing was diag- 10osed with a chest infection just prior Ito Michigan's season opener against Colorado College Oct. 21. He did not play then and has not seen any action at all since. In his absence, sophomore War- ren Luhning has been a more than adequate replacement. Through the team's first five games, he has scored five points including three goals, which ranks as the second-best total on the team. However, Luhning hasn't for- gotten what Knuble means to the Wolverines. "We're more arrogant when he's playing with us," Luhning said. "The team looks a lot more to him to score goals." Knuble entered this season as the team's top returning scorer. He tal- lied 32 goals and 26 assists totaling 58 points last season, ranking him third on the team.
