"The field of runners was more com- petitive than last year's.' Ironically, this was also Sullivan's first first-place finish in a major cross country meet this year. "It was a great win for Kevin, since he hasn't won yet this year," Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said. Other top finishers for the Michi- gan squad included junior All-Ameri- GET CUT FROMI THE PROS Go where the athletes go- } Barber Shop &Skate Sharpeningr can Scott MacDonald (24:32.7), fourth, captain Ian Forsyth (24:59.3), eighth and junior Theo Molla (25:17.1), 14th. However, not all was .joyous for the Michigan team. For all its suc- cess, one defeat still hurts. The Wol- verines lost the Big Tens this year, failing to regain the conference title they won in a major upset last year. "We did not run the best race we could," Molla said. "We have much more potential." Warhurst quickly recognized the central cause behind the Badgers' gaining the first place berth rather than the Wolverines. "We ran well up front with four guys in the top 14," he said. "But Wisconsin beat us with their fifth runner." Michigan's top four runners, who placed 1st, 4th, 8th and 11th, matched up equally with Wisconsin's top four finishers, 2nd, 3rd, 10th and 11th. After that, Wisconsin blazed ahead with its next three finishers, who took 16th, 20th and 21st place before the fifth Wolverine, Kris Eggle (27th) could cross the finish line. "We didn't get everything we wanted, but we did do well," MacDonald said. "Content would be the best way to describe it." WOMEN Continued from page 1 ing fierce competition from Big Ten powerhouse Wisconsin. Kathy Butler, the top Badger runner, finished second behind Arnill with a time of 17:19. "We knew it was going to take an outstanding effort to win," McGuire said. "We definitely had more than an outstanding effort." The Wolverines pre-game strat- egy was to group its top five runners together at the front of the pack as a way to establish the pace and estab- lish itself as the clear leader. "We intimidated all other teams by running in our group," senior Karen Harvey, who placed second for the Wolverines and third overall with a time of 17:23, said. Wisconsin coach Peter Tegen was not pleased with the his team's finish and expressed his feelings after the end of the race. "We did not really have our best race today," Tegen said. "We had a few things go wrong. I think Michigan ran just a really excellent race and they were clearly the best team today." The Wolverines compiled a point total of 29, their best of the three championship years. Michigan is now looking toward the District IV cham- pionships as a spring board for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Arkansas. Other Wolverine finishers Satur- day included freshman Pauline Arnill (fourth overall, 17:23), senior Jessi* Kluge (eighth, 17:45), freshman Eileen Fleck (13th, 18:07), sopho- more Jennifer Barber (14th, 18:08), junior Katy Hollbacher (18th, 18:16), junior Molly Lori (45th, 19:00), and Emily Shively (53rd, 19:13). Makhtar Ndiaye (sprained knee), MaceoBaston (separated shoulder) and Olivier SaintJean (knee tendinitis) have been stricken by significant injuries, while Dugan Fife (sprained ankle) is just returning from one. Saint Jean's injury is the cause of the most concern. He is rehabilitating his problematic left knee this fall, and his status will be evaluated in Decem- ber. He is, however, expected to play some time this season and will not be redshirted. He suffered from tendinitis in his left knee when he first joined the Wol- verines last fall. While playing for a club team in France this summer, he also developed bone spurs in that knee. Consequently, without the knowl- edge of the Michigan coaching staff, he underwent knee surgery in France this summer. The surgery compounded the tendinitis, which is keeping Saint Jean out of action this fall. Baston and Ndiaye suffered inju- ries in an October 24th practice, and both will be out for a couple of weeks. Ndiaye sprained his left knee when he landed on it awkwardly. Taylor's left shoulder came out of its socket after he fought Maurice Taylor for a rebound. He originally dislocated that shoulder his junior year in high school. Fife, who was on the sidelines wit a sprained ankle, returned to practi October 21. He twisted his ankle at the end of the summer. Mitch is away on Monday and Tuesday!
