The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, October 31, 1994 - 7 HOCKEY Continued from page . Turco matures in weekend series against Ferris injury and missed Saturday's contest. Muckalt's first score broke a 1-1 tie 13:38 into the game when he put back his own miss on a breakaway. The fulldogs nevergotevenagain asMichi- gan scored the game's last five goals. A critical sequence midway through the second period sealed the victory for the Wolverines. Michigan was nursing a 3-1 lead when Ferris' Brad Burnham narrowly missed cutting the deficit to one as his shot from the right wing hit the post. In the ensuing scramble, Michigan's John Arnold came up with the puck Ind proceeded to score on a two-on- one break with Ron Sacka. Instead of leading only 3-2, the Wolverines' had a three-goal advan- tage and the Bulldogs were finished. "Friday it worked the other way," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "We went down on a breakaway and were stopped and they came back down and scored. That's the way hockey *oes." Berenson wasreferring toasequence that occurred 9:18 into Friday's game. With the score tied at one, Michigan's Brendan Morrison missed on a breakaway, opening the door for Ferris' Gary Kitching to give the Bull- dogs a 2-1 lead on a breakaway of his own. The Wolverines lost their CCHA opener despite outshooting the Bull- Sogs, 38-28. "We had some good scoring chances that we didn'tcapitalizeon," Berenson said. "But it's tougher when you're coming from behind." Special teams were the key. Ferris tallied two goals via thepower play in six attempts - the first scores allowed by the Wolverine penalty kill- Jng unit this season. By comparison, e Wolverines couldconvertonly one in seven opportunities with aman ad- vantage. "Ourpowerplay didn't play as well as they needed to play," Berenson said. "They have to be able to get that goal back for us." The loss overshadowed a couple of firsts by Michigan freshmen. Matt Herr and Robb Gordon scored their first career goals as Wolverines. 'unfortunately for Michigan, the two goals came almost 52 minutes apart. Herr opened the scoring for both squads less than two minutes into the contest and Gordon tallied the last score ofthegame, 11:30intothe finalperiod. During the Michigan dry spell, Ferris builta3-1 advantage. Goals from Kitching and right wing Tim Christian gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead at the first ntermission. "It's harder to score when you need to score than when you have a big lead,"Berenson said. LeftwingJohn Duff providedFerris with atwo-goal lead late in the second, whichwas all itwould needtoholdoff Michigan and claim its first opening- nightvictory inCCHAplay since 1987. Berenson said that the Wolverines .were sharper Saturday. "I thought that our team played with more ofan edge and didn't give up as much defensively," Berenson said. "We capitalized on our chances. "It was a test of our team to see whether we were going to bounce back from a disappointing loss." IFERRIS STATE 3, MICHIGAN 2 By BARRY SOLLENBERGER Daily Hockey Writer BIG RAPIDS - Ferris State's offense is not in the same zip code, talent-wise with Lake Superior or Michigan State, but Marty Turco's performance in goal this weekend was still an important boost for the Michi- gan hockey team. Making only his second and third starts of his young career, . the freshman al- Q lowed only four goals in 46 at- tempts as the Wolverines split Turco with the Bull- dogs last weekend. Over the last 98 minutes of action, he allowed only one score - a first- period goal to Phil Sturock Saturday - a streak spanning almost five periods. In the process, Turco ran his record to 2-1 on the season. "I felt really comfortable in goal this weekend," he said. "I tried a few things thatl've been working on in practice- staying more alert, keeping my head up and staying down more often." Turco's showing was significant for aWolverine team that knew goaltending would be a concern coming into the season. After all, Michigan lost Steve Shields, the winningestgoalie in NCAA history, to graduation last spring. "I likedTurco's presence this week- end," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "He looked confident and this is a tough building to play in, particularly with these types of games." Turco asserted himself at a crucial moment in Michigan's win Saturday. He stopped two one-on-one shots by the Bulldogs' Gary Kitching within seconds of each other, with the Wolverines clinging to a 3-1 lead at the halfway point of the sec- ond stanza. His saves enabled Michigan to start a two-on-one break going the other way which John Arnold finished for a three-goal Wolverine advantage - a two-goal swing. Game over. "Instead of it being a 3-2 game and pretty even it was a 4-1 game," Ferris coach Bob Daniels said. "We didn't have the gas to come back after that." I "I thought that those were some key saves," Berenson said. "That's1 the difference that goalkeeping can make in a game." For the highly recruited Turco, the3 weekend was a needed lift for a fresh- man who has endured some bumps thus far this season. For starters, he was on the losing end of a 8-5 decision - in which he surrendered all eight goals for his team - in the Blue-White game Oct. 7. While the outcome didn't matter, the game did not do wonders for Turco's psyche. "At the start (of the season), I had my doubts with practice and every- thing," Turco said. "Butmy confidence grew a little bit and, hopefully, it will continue to grow." Turco said that practice has helped him prepare for the rigors of the CCHA season. Defending against the likes of Mike Knuble, Brendan Morrison, Ja- son Botterill and company prepares him for what lies ahead. "I'm playing against the best shooters in the league at practice," Turco said. "I like (the idea) of being really confident in practice and then to come into the games thinking that nobody can beat me." - SGobble'. Gobble! AN N R 6 O R 5TH AVE.
