8 - The Michigan Daily - Thursday, October 20, 1994 BIG TEN Continued from page 5 tailback Eddie George ran allover Spar- tan Stadium last week, amassing 219 yards. Buckeye quarterback Bobby Hoying must emerge from his shell and return to last year's form. Hoying and wideoutJoey Galloway have not come close to lastyear's propensity for hook- ing up consistently on big plays. Nonetheless, it's difficult to see the Boilermakers defeating the defending co-Big Ten champions on their home turf. It will be close, but the Buckeyes will prevail, 20-16. Michigan State (1-2,2-4) vs. Iowa (0-4,2-5) Both of these teams were blown out last week. Spartan coach George Perles needs to get a big game out of quarterback Tony Banks. The junior college transfer has been unable to deliver since the Spartans' game against Notre Dame. Iowa is in the midst of a major rebuilding period for its program. In last week's47-7 shellacking at the hands ofIllinois, The Hawkeyes, though, were able to gain 187 yards rushing against a tough Illinois defense. The Spartans have allowed over 600 yards rushing in theirlasttwogames. The Hawkeyes will run all over the Spartans, 24-7. Wisconsin (2-1-1,3-2-1)vs. Min- nesota (0-4,2-5) The big question in Madison this week is whether Brent Moss will re- turn Saturday. Do not worry Badger fans, Wisconsin will win with or with- out Moss this weekend at Minnesota. Last week Minnesota was beaten by Northwestern, who had not won a Big Ten game since 1992. The Gophers' inability to stop the run will be showcased against Wiscon- sin. Tailback Terrell Fletcher, who has emerged from Moss's shadow this year, should have a banner day. If Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez con- tinues to run the ball a blowout should follow. The Badgers will take revenge for what has been a disappointing season against the overmatched Go- phers. Wisconsin will win 52-17. Northwestern (1-2,2-3-1) vs.In- diana (2-1,4-1) Northwestern finally gotatasteof a Big Ten win last week in its win over Minnesota. The Wildcats' hopes rest on the shoulders of running back Dennis Lundy, who had a career day of 213 yards last week. Indiana's defense, led by outside linebacker Alfonso Thurman, is just too strong to allow Lundy another 200 yard game. Freshman running back, Alex Smith is following in the footsteps of former Hoosier greats Vaughn Dunbar and Anthony Thompson. Smith should have another solid perfor- mance against the Wildcats. Indiana, at home, after a bye, will have an easy time in dismissing North- western, 30-10. More mature Johnson conquers his pride to take control of ilmin offense El. By MIKE HELFGOT The Daily lhlni Maybe the Illinois coaching staff knew what it was doing with Johnny Johnson all along. Sure the coaches will stick to their "we can win with both quarterbacks" line, but Johnson has emerged from an early season quarterback derby with Scott Weaver to become one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten. An admittedly subpar 19-of-35, one touchdown performance against Purdue leftmany wondering if Weaver was only a mistake away from the starting job. But Johnson masterfully engi- neered the offense in a must-win situ- ation against Ohio State, taking charge and proving what he wanted to hear all along: That Johnny Johnson, you the man! Even coach Lou Tepper, who was furious with Johnson after his confu- sion in the season-opening loss to Washington State and has given Weaver every chance to win the job since, is now raving about Johnson. "Johnny Johnson has matured greatly over the past two or three weeks. He seems to have much better command of the offense," Tepper said after the 24-10 win in Columbus. "If he can continue to put forth that kind of steady effort, he certainly can be a very accomplished quarterback." Tepper was sure to be diplomatic, though. "We're also pleased with the devel- opment of Scott Weaver," he said, "and feel fortunate to have twoquarterbacks with whom we can play and win." But there can no longer be any doubt who the Illini's main man is. Johnson's 16-of-21, 224-yard, two touchdown performance against the Buckeyes earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors. And even more impressive than the numbers was the fashion with which they were compiled. Both his touch- down passes came on third down, a down he flourished on all half, com- pleting all four passing attempts for 86 yards when the Buckeyes were threat- ening to take the ball away. For the season, Johnson has com- pleted 64.5 percent of his 141 at- tempts for 934 yards and five touch- downs. He has not thrown an inter- Illinois signal caller Johnny Johnson, who has rebounded from a slow start, will lead the Illini attack against Michigan in Champaign Saturday. f i r { a II w i r h x r e i i 4r 4 r The program centers around a beginning level, 16 mm production workshop in which students complete five short black-and-white films during the course of the semester.
