12 -- The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 11, 1994 Stickers to take on No. 8 Ball State By MARC DILLER Daily Sports Writer One team - two personalities. No other description better de- fines this year's Michigan field hockey team, which has been more streaky than a drunk man in a trench coat. After having split their first four games, the Wolverines proceeded to win two on the road, lose four straight and then bounce back for two more home victories. That brings us to the present. Michigan intends to continue its recent dominance with a third con- secutive win. However, the task will not be easy. The Wolverines host eighth-ranked non-conference foe, Ball State (10-1-1), today at noon. "We've been playing pretty well and we've been progressively improv- ing," Michigan coach Patti Smith said. "We're doing smart things to put the ball in the net." The Wolverines have enjoyed their one week respite. Their last game resulted in a home victory over Michi- gan State. Smith used the time off to regroup for a difficult stretch to end the season. During the week, Michigan honed its fundamentals and made use of its addi- tional conditioning time. "It was nice to have a break in the competition and get some extra work in," Smith said. "All the other teams have been playing through and wish they had the opportunity to take this time off also." Today's match marks the clash of two streaking teams. Ball State is in the midst of an eight game win streak, losing last on September 10 at Ohio State. One streak will have to end today. "Ball State matches up to the same level of competition we will find in the Big Ten," Smith said. "The Cardinals desire to win is al- ways high." Leading the charge for Ball State is senior center-midfielder Cathy Basso, who is currently ranked sec- ond in the Mid-American Conference in scoring with 19 points. The Wolverines will attempt to counter with their own offensive threat. Sophomore attacker Michelle Smulders moved into the team lead for scoring (14 points) after her two goal performance last Tuesday against the Spartans. The Cardinals are not too shabby in the defensive back either. Already in its first 12 games, Ball State has forced nine shutouts and four team members have earned player of the week ac- knowledgments. The Cardinals senior goalie Mindy Pretzman has been in- domitable thus far in net, allowing only a .33 goals-against average, best in the MAC. AftertheBall State matchup, Michi- gan will resume its Big Ten season on the road against Ohio State and Penn State. Women By MICHELLE LEE THi Daily Sports Writer It's almost unfair. TheMichigan women's s Island recording artis WIG kickers predict (6-4-1) takes on Siena Heights (6-6-0) OMPSON tonight at 6:30, and the matchup looks like a bully beating up on the little guy. And when the Saints arrive at Elbel soccer team Field they will probably take a look around and realize that Ann Arbor is a big city, and their favored opponents have already made abig name forthem- selves in their first year. "It shouldn'teven beaclosegame," said midfielder Kim Phillips, predict- ing a convincing Michigan win. But despite their size and depth advantages, the injury-plagued Wol- R S verines have potential problems to worry about, in the form of three play- ers who have only recently recovered from injuries. Freshman defense star Carrie Povilaitis didn'tpractice yester- day due to a tailbone injury incurred in - Buffalo but is expected to play today. -_ Mindy Longjohn has only recently re- turned from an ankle sprain, and fresh- man forward Karen Montgomery just came off a wrist injury. Goaltender Jory Welchans is still out of the lineup following a sprained ankle in Buffalo, so Alicia Smith is S g expected to guard the net tonight. Welchans remembers last season 1 I I when sheplayed fortheDetroit-Mercy. win tonight The Titans beat Siena Heights 10-1 in a near-shutout, so if that score, com- bined with this season's Wolverine overtime win over Mercy, is any indi- cation, the Saints are in trouble. But it isn't the Wolverines' style to go into a game with too much conf dence. The team's first year has bee spotted with hard-learned lessons, in- cluding the consequences of getting too comfortable, learned in a2-1 loss to Minnesota when it was the Wolverines who dominated for most of the match. "I know that they're a physical team ...we have to play quick so we don't get hatched," said Phillips, who is tied with Deb Flaherty and Ruth Poulin fog top scorer with four tallies each. The Wolverines' strategy worked last weekend against the University of Buffalo at New York. Despite a seem- ingly narrow 2-1 victory, Michigan clearly outplayed their hosts, outshooting them 24-7. Tonight's game and Friday's up- coming game against St. Francis in Pennsylvania make this week the easi. est in the Wolverines' season, and thM games will serve as preparation for Sunday's tougher game against Penn State.
