The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 10, 1994 - 9 'Meat'y music for moshing By BRIAN A. GNATT After recording together for 14 years, being endorsed by Kurt Cobain and Dave Pirner, and jamming with shock jock Howard Stern, the Meat Puppets are finally getting the atten- tion they deserve. Their latest release (their first on a major label, Island), "Too High To Die," went gold last week, and they are presently headlin- ing a club tour across the country. "We had pretty much reached the ceiling of what we could do on an independent, and that's why we switched over (to a major label)," drummer Derrick Bostrom said. "Af- ter years of long hard work, it was just about time. We put our best foot for- ward, and just did what we'd been doing all this time." And the time was right. "Too High To Die" sold like cigarette paper dur- ing hash bash. The first single, "Back- water," had people moshi ng all across the country, and was being played over the radio enough to wear out the CD. After eight full albums to their credit, the Phoenix, Arizona based trio refined their sound a bit, adding more harmonies and giving the album 'We were one of the more natural bands that started taking rock 'n' roll music and refiltering it, rather than being anti-in-the-past. Instead of being reactionary, we were progressive.' - Meat Puppets drummer Derrick Bostrom a more polished and matured feel. Produced by Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, a long time fan of the band, "Too High" gave the Puppets an over- night shove into the mainstream. See MEAT, Page 9 ff / ::. .
