The Michigan Daily - SPORTSMonday - Monday, October 10. 1994 - 5 M I C H I 0 A N S T 20 FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK Collins now fourth on school's career passing list By MICHAEL ROSENBERG Daily Football Writer In Todd Collins' first-ever start for Michigan, subbing for an injured Elvis Grbac against Oklahoma State in 1992, he set the school record for comple- tions in a game with 29. The quarterback has been moving up in the Wolverine record books ever since. With 211 yards passing Saturday, Collins slipped past Rick Leach in career passing yardage. Collins is now fourth on the Wolverine career list. Collins' immediate predecessor, Elvis Grbac, is Michigan's career leader with 6460 career passing yards. Jim Harbaugh is second with 5449. Collins should catch Harbaugh by the end of the year, but Grbac will be a reach. 'Collins completed 16 of 23 passes against the Spartans. A year ago, Collins 9npleted one more pass against Michigan State for one more yard. But he threw 33 passes in that 17-7 loss. THE THRILL WAS GONE: Michigan State flanker Mill "The Thrill" Coleman has played quarterback, running back and wide receiver at various times in his Spartan career. He has also been a punt returner. Maybe Michigan State coach George Perles should have switched Coleman to another position Saturday. The senior did not gain a single yard against the Wolverines. He did not have a one reception or even a carry. "He's just another weapon you've got to take away from them," Michigan ch Gary Moeller said of Coleman. BLOWING HORN'S HORN: Senior defensive lineman Jason Horn played probably his best collegiate game this weekend. He had six tackles, including two sacks, each for a 10-yard loss. Horn also recovered a fumble. In fact, the entire defensive line played outstanding. Horn, Trent Zenkewicz and Tony Henderson combined for 15 tackles. Zenkewicz also had a sack and caused the fumble Horn recovered. GAME STATISTICS PASSING Player C-A Banks 16-23 Totals 16-23 Yds 269 269 TD 2 2 Int 0 0 RUSHING Player At Goulbourne 1 S. Because he was forced to scramble so often, Banks' rush- ing total came out to -54 yards. "I might have shown today why I was playing junior college last year," Banks said. "When I'm on my back I pretty much figure some- thing went wrong." hsBanks spent much of his time on his back as the Wolverines' defense sacked him five times, including two by defensive lineman Jason Horn, who recovered a fumble at the end of the third quarter that helped set up a Michigan scoring drive. Eight plays after the turnover, Remy Hamilton put the Wolverines up, 40-13, with his fourth field goal of the day - a 21-yard success. Collins spent little time on his back as Michigan's offensive line held the Spartan defensive line at bay. Collins had enough time to complete 16-of-23 for 211 yards. Forty-seven of those yards came on a drive late in the second quarter. With 1:56 remaining in the first half, Michigan began at its own 23- yard line, ahead 13-6. As he did - h{against Notre Dame, Collins led the Wolverines to a score despite hav- ing no time outs to use. Following Wheatley's 25-yard scamper through the middle of the Spartans' defense, Collins hit Mer- cury Hayes on a crossing route for 14 yards. He then connected on his DOUGLAS KANTER/Daily next three passes, including a 21- 'I might have shown today why I was playing junior college last year. Wheatley busted around right end for his second touchdown of the day two plays later, and with Remy Hamilton's extra point, the Wolver- ines owned a 20-6 halftime lead. "We go in 20-6 instead of 13-6, it gives us a cushion, a little more con- fidence going in," said Collins. The Wolverines continued to hold the Spartans' offense under wraps until the 3:32 mark of the third quarter when Banks victimized a blitzing Michigan defense by hitting fullback Scott Greene with a short pass. Greene rumbled 18 yards, untouched, into the end zone. However, Michigan answered 1:51 later. After nearly being tackled in the backfield, Biakabutuka sprinted 27 yards for a touchdown. Biakabutuka nearly lost yardage on the play but managed to escape a Michigan State defender in the backfield. He sprinted to the outside for the score, but not before leaving defensive back Luke Bencie in the dust with a fake at the 20-yard line. "You're always concerned when a team scores 20 points on you, no matter who's in there - first team, second, third, guys from the stands," outside linebacker Matt Dyson said. "You don't want a team to go down the field and score on you." But on the Spartans' last full possession before the gun sounded, they did just that, again using the big play to burn the Wolverines. Banks hit Carter for a 30-yard strike on fourth-and-seven. The Spartans then went in for another touchdown to close the scoring.
