By EUGENE BOWEN Daily Sports Writer The Wolverine men's cross coun- try team entered the Michigan Inter- collegiate Championships Saturday hoping to make up for a disappointing meetin the Rocky Mountain Shootout atColorado in Boulder a week earlier. Its performance lived up to its expec- tations. "We destroyed everybody," jun- ior All-American Scott MacDonald said. The men swept the 8,000-meter meet held at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The Wolverines scored 22 points, far surpassing second place finisher, Western College (66) and third place Hillsdale College (93). Individual runners performed well, placing in four of the top five places. Sophomore All-American Kevin Sullivan won the meet with a time of 24:10, a meet record. MacDonald came in second with 24:30, junior Kris Eggle took third with 25:06 and sophomore Dave Barnett won fifth place with a time of 25:20. Missing from the meet, however, was team captain Ian Forsyth, who coach Ron Warhurst kept from run- ning this week. Forsyth had run three previous races, and he and Warhurst felt he needed time to recuperate. "Everyone seemed to do better than they did last week (in Colo- rado)," said junior Theo Molla who took 1Ith place (25:41) in this, his first meet of the season. The times prove Molla right. Al- though both the Michigan Intercol- legiate and the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Colorado were 8,000- meter meets, the runners' speeds were much better in Kalamazoo. Sullivan, MacDonald, Barnett and sophomore Ryan Burt (12th place, 25:49) each shaved over two min- utes off their Colorado times. Eggle chopped off over three minutes. This radical change in times sug- gests that the oxygen-poor high alti- tude of Colorado contributed greatly to the men's disappointing fourth place score of 119 in the Rocky Moun- tain Shootout. "This meet was relaxing, but a good confidence booster at the same time," Sullivan said.. However, Sullivan noted one Michigan weakness in the race that he would like to see improved. "I think the one thing we're go- ing to have to do is get our third to seventh place group closer to- gether," he said. Women's cross country near perfect at Western m f: ' %
