SPIKERS Continued from page 12 four nationally ranked teams this year, including the then-No. 2 Lady Lions and then-No. 3 Long Beach State. The Buckeyes have a 22-1 record against the Wolverines under coach Jim Stone, including 13 straight vic- tories overall and 13 in a row at St. John's Arena. Michigan's last vic- tory over Ohio State came in 1987, when the Wolverines won five-game match in Ann Arbor. Michigan will need to watch out for lastweek's Big Ten Playerofthe Week, Jenny Jackson, who amassed a career- high 23 kills and had a .636 hitting percentage in a win over Minnesota. All-America setter Laura Davis aids Jackson and the Ohio State offense. Penn State (3-1, 14-1), the runner- up in last year's NCAA finals, poses even greater problems for the Wolver- ines. Since entering the Big Ten in 1991,the Lady Lions have posted a 55- 9 conference record and have swept all eight matches from Michigan. Penn State is led by seniors Laura Cook, Saundi. Lamoureux, Jen Reimers and Salima Davidson, who was last year's Big Ten Player of the Year and a second-team All-America. Michigan will not have time to come up for air after this weekend, as it faces No. 11 Notre Dame Tuesday. By BRETT KRASNOVE For the Daily Last season, Wisconsin was headed to a Big Ten title, which the Badgers followed up by defeating UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Now, Wis- consin fights to remain in the Top 25. As if losing to Michigan State wasn't bad enough, Wisconsin lost starting quarterback Darrell Bevell with a separated shoulder. To say the least, the Badgers don't have a rosy outlook as they head to Evanston. Here's a preview of that game, as well as the rest of the Big Ten slate: Wisconsin (1-1 Big Ten, 2-2 Overall) at Northwestern (0-1, 1-2- 1) With Darrell Bevell out and with the Badger defense allowing 259 yards rushing to Michigan State last week- end, Wildcat running back Dennis Lundy becomes a huge factor. Wisconsin's Moss will get his 100- plus yards, but if Lundy finds some holes like the Spartans' backs did last week, he could lift his team over the hurting Badgers. Maybe this week the Wildcats will save something for the second half. Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 21. Illinois (0-1, 2-2) at Ohio State (1-0, 4-1 Buckeye coach John Cooper fired up the running game last week at Northwestern, handing workhorse Eddie George the ball a whopping 39 times and George ran for 206 yards - the key ingredient in Ohio State's comeback victory. Will they keep it on the ground again? Look for quar- terback Bobby Hoying to throw some passes in the direction of wide re- ceiver Joey Galloway. Meanwhile, Illinois' players are trying to forget John Jackson, the 5- foot-7 Purdue cornerback, who tack- led 6-foot-5 tight end Ken Dilger atepe The Fighting Illini is left searching for its first Big Ten win at Columbus. Ohio State 26, Illinois 17. Indiana (1-1, 4-1) at Iowa (0-2, 2-3) A message to Hawkeye quarter- back Ryan Driscoll: Beware of the Hoosier defense. Last week, Indiana overcame a 14-10 halftime deficit to edge Minnesota by forcing five turn- overs, including two pickoffs from speedy Reggie Bryant. However, if the Iowa defense puts forth the effort it did last week, the Hoosiers are in for a tough battle. Iowa 17, Indiana 15. Minnesota (0-2, 2-3) at Purdue (1-0, 3-1) The Boilermaker fans welcome home new hero Jackson, who argu- ably made the biggest tackle of Purdue's season at Illinois. It's time to stop celebrating. The Boilermakers need another 100-yard performance from running back Corey Rogers and more eight-play, 80-yard drives like the one Rich Trefzger en- gineered to defeat the Illini. Minnesota used three quarterbacks in a loss to Indiana. Chris Darkins stepped up last Saturday with 147y, yards rushing. A repeat performance might keep the Golden Gophers in the game.
