6-- The Michigan Daily -- SPORTSMonday - Monday, October 3, 1994 SPLIT Continued from page 1 verine half of the field, and Michigan was able to capitalize on its numerous forays into Nittany Lion territory. At the 8:31 mark of the first half, junior forward Gia Biagi passed to freshman defender Julie Flachs, who was able to drive the ball past Penn State goalkeeper Shelley Meister. Flachs' goal proved to be all the Wol- yermes would need, and provided them with some much-needed momentum. (The goal) was definitely (a psy- chological boost)," Flachs said. "It's been a long time coming." In the second half Penn State at- tacked more effectively, since it was now able to go "with the grain" on the field. The Nittany Lions attacked pri- marily on the right side, and were able to make gains into Michigan territory. Once there, though, they were met by stiff resistance on the part of the Wolverine defense. Penn State's shots were batted away, and the ball was cleared outof theMichigan zone. Smith praised her defense's efforts. "We're doing smarter things on the field defensively and we're not giving up any penalty corners," Smith said. With only minutes left, the Wolver ines seemed to have the game in th bag. But the Nittany Lions were able tc conjure up two penalty corner attempts in the final minute of play. At thi point, Geisthardt knew what she had to do. I was just concentrating on the ball," goalie Geisthardt said. "I knew they weren't going to score." Geisthardt and the defense met the challenge head-on, and turned away the final Nittany Lion attempts to sal- vage a tie. Michigan cleared the ball and the last seconds ticked off the clock e Stickers feel loss e sof senior scoring By RAVI GOPAL e Daily Sports writer The Michigan field hockey team has had its share of scoring woes over its first four conference games, tallying just two goals over that span. The lack of offensive punch is due to the fact that last year, the Wolverines' top two scorers graduated. Kalli Hose and Keely Libby accounted for 41 of Michigan's 106 points in 1993. Last year's third-leading scorer, Aaleya Koreishi, has been moved to defense to aid the development of the Wolverines' youth. Koreishi, who tallied 13 points last year, now leads the defensive corps which features five under- classmen. FINALLY, A 'W': Michigan's 1-0 defeat of Penn State yesterday marks the first time the Wolverines have defeated the Nittany Lions. The Wolverines now sport a 1-5 lifetime record against Penn State. The victory also ended a four-game losing skid for Michigan and gave goalkeeper Rachael Geisthardt her second shutout this season. The Wolverines' last victory had been over Central Michigan,3-2,on Sept. 14, over three weeks ago. Geisthardt' s first shutout came right before, with a 1-0 triumph over St. Louis on Sept. 11. A GOAL, AT LAST: When the Wolverines' Julie Flachs scored at the 8:31 mark of the first half against Penn State, it marked a number of firsts. Flachs' goal was the first scored by Michigan at home FIELD HOCKEY NOTEBOOK against a conference opponent. It also ended a scoring drought of 144 minutes and 37 seconds by the Wolverines. The span last through Michigan's past three games, against Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa. The last time the Wolverines scored was on a Koreishi goal at 13:08 of the first half versus the Hawkeyes. Flachs' goal leaves her in third place in total points for Michigan this season. Junior Gia Biagi lead the team in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore Michelle Smulders is second with 10 points. OH-FER: During the past two games, Michigan has gone a combined 0-for-17 on penalty corner attempts. Its ' opponents, meanwhile, have only gone 2-for-10 How- ever, Ohio State was much more successful than the Wolverines' second weekend opponent, Penn State. The Buckeyes converted on two of three attempts, while the Nittany Lions failed on all ten occasions. YOUTH POWER: Although Michigan counts 12 un- derclassmen on its roster, including eight freshman Buckeyes are even younger. Eleven of Ohio State's 18 members are first-year players, and a total of 14 are underclassmen. Penn State has fewer green players than either team, with only ten underclassmen on its roster. 'THE VicToRs': After its win yesterday over the Nittany Lions, the Wolverines were able to sing their fight song while jogging the celebratory victory lap for the first time against a conference foe. Michigan is now 1-3 in the Big Ten, with losses to Ohio State, Iowa and Northwestern.
